I still have my original cd set of Bg 2 and throne of Bhaal. I'd like to get back to playing them but after loading up the BG2 cd's I find that whiney old windows 10 wants something called Direct play. I went into the settings and enabled direct play but then i got a message that 'the configuration registry database is corrupt' and error code 0x800703F1. I have used a registry clean tool and also used windows updates checkers all to no avail. I am not very computer clever. Anyone have any tips please?

Be sure to read all 12 posts, but one of the main points is to disable your antivirus when installing. Hopefully one of those solutions will work for you.

Thank you, I will certainly try that.

* tried all the things in the posts and disabled the anti virus. Sadly I still get the message that direct play cant run because the registry is corrupted. Damn, was looking forward to playing BG2 again :-(

Is it telling you that the Windows registry is corrupted? Or does it mean the registry entry is corrupted? If the former, that's likely a serious issue. You may want to google that and find out what to do about it. If the latter, then perhaps try uninstalling the game and maybe a reinstall. Install it outside of Programs. Something like C\:Games would be a better choice, as there are a lot more protections in the Programs folder and that sometimes messes with things.

Can you post the exact message you get?

I have the GOG version installed on my Win10 rig and have no issues with it. If you want to try that, I believe I have an extra key for BG1 and BG2 that I could toss your way. But see if you can get the registry issue resolved first.

message that 'the configuration registry database is corrupt' and error code 0x800703F1' . Thats the message i get every time. I have installed, re-installed etc many times, turned off the anti virus etc but to no avail. I will try installing the game outside of the programs like you suggest. I'm not sure about a key as my game does not ask for a key. Never has. I bought it kosher in a shop, so it's not a copy, all original. I think the problem is something do do with windows 10 updates and as that's all automatic now I am at a loss as to what to do next. Thanks for your help :-)
Do these help?

https://www.tenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/20968-windows-10-doesnt-download-updates-gives-me-error-0x800703f1.html
I tried the refresh but got the same result as the poster in the link - couldn't be refreshed//reset, no changes made. i don't want to go to the extreme of losing all my information on my pc and doing a clean install and i dont think i have the knowledge to be honest, not just for an old game. So, I thank you both for your help and I think I have to accept that I can't play it. :-( God, how I hate windows.

You could try a refresh (which won't nuke your files.). Instructions here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4090-refresh-windows-10-a.html

**EDIT** ACK! Apologies. I see you tried that very thing (sorry, I'm posting from work, so a bit distracted). **EDIT**

No, I meant the GOG version. I can give you a key to redeem here on GOG and you could try to install GOG's non-CD version of the game. But...

It appears you actually have an issue with your Windows registry, which will likely mean the GOG version of BG isn't going to work either. I'd suggest getting that fixed, as it may cause you issue with other things down the road. Anyway, give a look at the link I posted above and see if you think that's something you can do. It may fix your issue - hopefully without too many repercussions.

BG doesn't need any registry entries to run. Which exe do you launch?

But on Windows 10, it seems it requires Direct Play, which he can't install due to registry issues.
Have you already tried this possible solution?

Read the guide, these steps are the solution in case of problems with OS file corruption:

1) Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search. Type Command Prompt in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

2) Type the following command, and then press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

3) Type the following command and press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.

sfc /scannow

DISM creates a log file (%windir%/Logs/CBS/CBS.log) that captures any issues that the tool found or fixed. %windir% is the folder in which Windows is installed. For example, the %windir% folder is C:\Windows.
