I finally bought BG1 and 2 during the D&D Games sale. I had heard from a friend how wonderful they were, and while I used to have a copy of them, I never played them and figured this would be a good opportunity to try them out.

Unfortunately, they are both unplayable. The image I attached is the main screen of BG1, but BG2 is identical. Further screens in the game -- including character creation -- maintain this appearance.

System is as follows.

Win 7-64
Intel Core i5-750
Sapphire Radeon 5870, native screen res is 1680x1050.
4 GB RAM
Both games are installed in a non-Windows drive.

First,
Have you tried updating your graphics card drivers?

edit: Second I would try, with BG2, tweaking color depth, resolution, and 3d settings. I would also try installing the widescreen fix on BG2 and seeing what happens.

Disable "Morphological Filtering" in your graphics drivers options.
Also made sure that Anti Aliasing is disabled (or set to application control)...
I'm with Anarki. It looks like your graphics card is over-riding the program. Normally, it blurs graphics because it takes away hard lines, but it's distorting things terribly here. You should be able to disable everything from your graphics card's options (usually something like "allow program to choose setting" or something like that).

You will also want to install Gibberlings widescreen modification. It helped me a lot with some fuzzy graphics.

You'll find it here: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/baldur_s_gate/baldurs_gate_2_essential_mods/page1

first topic, #11 on the list.
Excellent. This did the trick. I had everything else set to allow application control, but this particular option doesn't have that choice. Thanks! I don't have to feel like I wasted $12 now. :)

Since you have brought both BG1 and BG2, I suggest to check out BG_Tutu or BGT modification of the game.

Using either of the above two, will enable one to play BG1 using BG2 engine.

The guide for it, is mentioned here ->
