Hello darkness, my old friends.

Night in the Woods, an offbeat but strangely relatable story about reconsidering your life choices, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com.

When Mae returns to her hometown after three unfruitful semesters in college, everything seems changed: her friends have moved on, the city is in recession, and weird stuff is happening every night in the nearby woods. On top of all that, Mae is haunted by bizarre nightmares that totally mess up her attempts at a carefree daily routine.

Anyone here playing this? I'm about 4-5 hours in and having a total blast! Definitely my GOTY so far. I suck at the Demontower and "rocksmith" mini-games, though.

Incidentally, my XBox One controller works like a charm and I think it's slightly preferable to the m/k combination (which I normally favor and was using for the first 2-3 hours of the game).

It really is the perfect game for a lazy Sunday or a stressful evening after work.
Oh, and Gregg rules ok.
Gee, you guys are good. I'm still trying to defeat the Level II boss and failing miserably every time :/

Btw, a small correction to what I said earlier: the game doesn't really use the mouse so it's just keyboard controls vs gamepad.

Level II boss, here I come again!

Marioface5: Are you just talking about a minigame, or does the whole game not have mouse controls?
As far as I can tell, the mouse is never used throughout the game proper or the mini-games. The controls are super-simple overall, it's just that everything feels just a tad more intuitive with a gamepad.

PaterAlf: Except for the guitar-hero-minigame which is easier with the keyboard (because you can use four fingers instead of just one or two with a gamepad).
To be honest, I suck at it regardless of the input device, so...
Played the first session with a keyboard and the second one with my controller and completely botched both of them. Now there's a third one coming up and I feel like I'm no closer to getting the hang of it :(

At least I reached the third level in the Demontower dungeon \o/

Fortuk: Just wait until you get to level 8...I just beat the Demontower and feel that was the hardest level by far. There might be a secret somewhere on level 10 as well, but I haven't figured that one out yet.
Oh man, congrats! Honestly, I don't see myself ever getting this far in Demontower. I mean, in my last couple of sessions I got sucked so deeply into the story, I completely neglected my Demontower dailies and now suddenly I'm at the Epilogue. I think I've spent around 12-13 hours with it in total. Worth. Every. Minute.

This game is just so unexpectedly heartfelt and awesome. Everything feels slightly whimsical but also extremely familiar at the same time - it's really hard to put into words. I will miss it dearly :/

PaterAlf: Does anyone else think that this game absolutely needs a key or command to hug other characters?
OMG YES PLEASE

@Smannesman

It truly is a unique experience but to me it's quite different than a Double Fine game. It looks cute, yes, and the writing is smart and quirky, but the themes, the gameplay, and the narrative style don't really resemble the games that Double Fine usually makes (perhaps some parts of Costume Quest...kinda?).

That said, I'm a huge Double Fine fan and also happened to love Night in the Woods, soooo... :)
So I've completed the game and I can safely say that it was a truly unforgettable ride. I really hope to revisit these characters someday, although this isn't the kind of game that would benefit from a sequel.

Also managed to reach Level V of the Demontower game! I was literally two slashes away from vanquishing the fifth boss but alas, it was not meant to be. I'm bummed that you don't have access to it after completing the story, though. I imagine it could be easily arranged through an extra button on the main menu or something. Oh well.
