The Shadow Warrior reboot and Hard Reset carried on that horde onslaught spirit. Serious Sam is still kicking serious butt.
There's no shortage of games trying to capitalize on the re-emerged appreciation for the "retro" FPS outside of the previous narrative-focused throne squatters and assembly line clones.
What I'd like to see is more games attempting to break from just drawing inspiration from the Dooms, Dukes, Bloods, Quakes, Hexens, Heretics, Serious Sams, Painkillers, etc. and work at establishing era relevant gimmicks and tricks and other nonsense of their own. It's fine to "borrow" an aesthetic or other elements from a classic of days gone by, but it's another to put focus and effort toward coming up with something that will be remembered as well as the classics beloved by many and often still played to the current day. Right now the current focus on making things people remember is often pointed at the rear-end of the horse with lazy developers making slapdash cash grabs in engines they have no idea how to fully utilize the tools in and then calling it a day. People aspiring to be competent game developers shouldn't pull a Hunt Down The Freeman styled cock-up and then just trip into a job with Activision. They should be putting in the work it takes to deliver a solid product to an audience and not a turd masquerading as a game.
