I have to lower my laptops ram from this

8GB DDR3 1600MHz [SKU–424P] (Dual Channel Memory (2x4GB SODIMMS))

to this
8GB DDR3 [SKU–244AM] (Dual Channel Memory)

how much worse is this lower one?
I plan on playing games like planetside 2,the secret world,battlefield 4,and arma2.

Hear are some other specs of my laptop if they matter

(Processor)
3rd Generation Intel® Ivy Bridge Core™ i7-3630QM (2.4GHz - 3.4GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache, 45W Max TDP)
(Graphics Card)
nVidia GeForce GTX 670M 1,536MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11

im way out of the parts list circle atm so ill let someone with a more upto date feeling answer that.
can i ask why you have to lower it? only one slot?
There's not really enough information posted to tell .. You said the first is 1600Mhz, but no mention of the speed on the second. Got any more info? What's the manufacturer of the RAM? Maybe can google the SKU to find..

Edit: I just realized you're probably just copy/pasting a parts list from a custom laptop order.. If so, the fact that they don't mention the speed on the second one probably means its 1333Mhz for your processor

If it were me, I'd pay the extra $50 now for the faster RAM and get your full potential. You can always upgrade later, but it will be more expensive since you'll be buying RAM twice. But to answer your actual question, you probably won't see a major performance hit in your games

ok well is this ram good?

8GB DDR3 1600MHz [SKU-814V] (Corsair Vengeance CL9 Dual Channel Memory (1x8GB SODIMMS))
Why is this thread low rated? Am I missing something? Is "is this ram still good" slang for "Hitler was right"? Seriously people, derep me to hell for no reason, I don't give flying fart, but do you have to be such assholes to everyone else in here!?

Why would you want to or have to go from Dual Channel 8GB to Single Channel 8GB memory? You would require two DIMMs for it to be Dual Channel Memory, one DIMM is single channel.

Corsair is one of the manufacturers I tend to buy. Are you planning on purchasing two of these DIMMS for an upgrade to 16GB? If so, make sure your laptop supports 16GB. has a very good laptop upgrade, that will tell you how many DIMM slots you have and the max memory it supports. [url=http://www.corsair.com/us/learn_n_explore/]Corsair also has one, but it tends to be missing a lot of the models I purchase.
Also, 8GB is really the sweet spot and 16GB would not be needed except for encoding video or running photoshop.
Ah i still remember when i borrowed 32 mb of sdram from a friend to add to my 16 mb so that we could play the first unreal at a higher frame rate. And i can still remember how my upgrade from 8 to 16 mb increased the performance of the first tomb raider.

Ah yes. And before that the times of the good old 640k base memory. The 'joys' of fiddling around with highmem, EMS and XMS under DOS. Those were the times when (getting) games (to run) was still challenging. :-)

Hmm that sounds a little bit before my time :) My earliest hardware memory was the upgrade of my 386 to a 486. I remember I immediately tried to see whether Testdrive worked any better and took the Lamborgini for a spin. But yeah games were difficult to get working back then. The same friend of mine used to have an 86, or XT computer i believe it was called, with a tiny harddrive. So if we wanted to play King's quest we had to first delve into his set of cases of floppies to find the 7 discs the game was on, and then reinstall it. I dont think he had double sided double density discs (1.2 mb?)

Today's kids hmpff :P what do they know hehe...

I preferred the Jaguar. :-)

The XT was from the 286 generation btw. I believe (there were some nice games on it though). But I don't think the even older 8086 (86 for short) had any graphics support to speak of and so had hardly any games beyond text adventures. It basically was only an desktop-size pocket calculator. :-)

I recall playing Trial by Fire on an 8086 (or was it 8088?). Each time I encountered a monster in the desert the game would freeze up for about a minute while it was loading the fight. Can't say how happy I was when I moved to the 80386DX, so I could finally play the game without that many lockups. Not that I knew what I was doing at that time, but still fun ;)

I think i used the jag when i tried to complete the game without attracting any police attention, just to see what would happen (nothing did btw) In anycase, the F40 left everything in the dust.

Ah thanks i did not know that. There must have been plenty of ascii pseudo graphical adventures though. I wish somebody would kickstart another caveman olympics game :P Hmmm i think i will go and look gor it on abandonia and try it again. I never could get the hang of wife-toss
Regarding RAM, first of all, looks like you're quoting the XOTIC PC page. The difference in price between the original two options is $25. For $50 over the base RAM you can get 16GB (4GBx4) at 1600 speed, which I think is a good deal, since you're both upgrading the speed and doubling the size, all for a price that's hard to find if you buy the extra 8GB separately later.

Of course it's hard to tell how good that memory is, what brand and timing specs, but I can't imagine it'd turn out too bad.

As for the difference between 1333 and 1600 in performance, it's not great, but it depends on what you run. See for example: the WinRAR test is very affected by memory speed, but most other tests aren't. [url=http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/memory-bandwidth-latency-gaming,3409-4.html]Here are some more tests for games. They only show 1600 and up, but I assume that interpolating to 1333 would be valid.

As for the memory memories, I remember paying $700 for 16MB on my first PC (486-DX2 66), at an age when most people have 4MB, because I used OS/2 and 8MB wasn't enough. Still, OS/2 multitasked Windows 3.1 programs much better than Windows 3.1 did. Before that I had an Amiga. I still look down at all those PC users of the time.
