I'm not looking for a specific title, just want some suggestions from you guys. I'd like a change of pace from the games I'm currently playing and I thought, I like stories set in medieval times, there must be some good games with such settings (especially point 'n clicks). However there are a few specific things to keep in mind so the choice of games might be somewhat limited :

> no cartoonish designs, educational or comedy

> preferably 1st person games

> not mandatory but it would be a plus if the story has fantastic/paranormal elements like religious dark rituals, demons and shit. thrillers work too even if there are no such elements involved.

> no hidden items games, like those you see on smartphones

> runs on Windows 7

That's about it. Man I feel like I could consider myself lucky if there's even a couple of games fitting that description...

Thank you

Witcher.

It's an RPG, though. At least the first one.

Profanity: Witcher.

I tried, unfortunately I hated the combat system. "At least the first one", you mean the sequel isn't ??

It's technically an RPG I guess, but the RPG elements of it are pretty meh.
I'd say Betrayal at Krondor meets your criteria except for the fact that it's an RPG. Fantasy medieval with a well-written story, not cartoonish, has a 1st person view when not in combat.

The only point and click adventure games that come to mind could be considered cartoonish in their art style and are not 1st person. They have their charms, though. King's Quest and Quest for Glory series.

Beyond that I'm coming up empty.

Dragon Age Origins, Game of Thrones
OK, my bad, I guess I should have mentionned no RPG, hack&slash or anything action-y, since those are the kind of games I already play and I want a break from them. I always assumed "adventure games" meant "point 'n click" so that's why I didn't say anything about other genres in the 1st post.
How about The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav? I haven't played it yet (still in my backlog), but it sounds close enough to what you are looking for.
If you can find them, the older Dragon Lore games fit the bill.

Not quite the requested setting, but also recommended is Lighthouse: The Dark Being.

Sierra's Conquests Of Camelot
man thats some tough criteria...

i dont think there is anything that fits the bill completely.

im thinking "broken sword 1" though. it is "cartoonish" and not strictly medieval. BUT its no comedy and it is about the Templars and visiting some medieval sites.

Crispy78: Sierra's Conquests Of Camelot
No no no, not Camelot.

It is a silly place.
These Sierra games were solid and may suit. I'm reminded of them often enough, as my brother still quotes them, and many of his cellphone noises stem from Conquests of the Longbow.

Sounds like what you're looking for is Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption (available on GOG). The first half of the game is taking place in medieval Europe. The writing is absolutely amazing and everything really feels medieval. Also there's LOTS of occult stuff going on with whole vampire clans working in the shadows of human society, some of them specializing in dark experiments and rituals and it's one of the few fantasy games actually dealing seriously with real religions like Christianiy and Judaism (with the main character actually being a crusader, vampires being the descendents of biblical Kain etc.). Pretty sophisticated and brave stuff (considering that some developers got into trouble just for including a church in their game or something :P).

And yeah, it's actually an ARPG like Diablo but it DOES have lots of multiple choice dialogue and IIRC also a few riddles.
