In BGEE2, I have tried to put the game in "Story Mode" using the Options button to go to Gameplay and then clicking the Story Mode red diamond. There does not appear to be a "save choices" or "accept changes" button to keep the changes I want. When I go back to the game, I am in normal mode. .

Is there something I am missing?
I have used Story Mode in both BGEE 1 and IWD when I wanted to get past a particularly troublesome opponent and get on with the story. Yes, I realize that this is not a gaming purist's way out of a bind, but after- often -spending a few days getting zapped or cut down to splinters by the very tough foe, I just wanted to get on with the game and enjoy it.

I hope that I am in the right forum ( not a Tech problem, I think), There must be something I am missing. A helpful reply would be much appreciated.

Try clicking story mode, then press OK/accept settings button. Otherwise, you have a bug.

To accept changes you press 'Done' >> 'Return to game'.
If you can't get story mode to work, you could enable cheats and get through that way. I can think of two obvious ways to cheat past a fight without making the rest of the game too easy:

1. Enable cheat keys, then move the mouse cursor to the enemy and press Ctrl+Y; this kills any creature that can be HP killed.

2. Use the cheat C:CreateItem("Killsw01"). This gets you a weapon that looks like a Long Sword +2, but is actually much stronger (to the point where it breaks the game), and unlike a regular Long Sword +2, can be equipped by anybody (even mages). Use the sword to win the battle, then drop it on the ground so it will disappear after a few days.

Note that, unlike story mode, these cheats work in the original version of BG2 as well as in the EE.
