On returning to BG1 after not playing it for a few months, I noticed that my save files were missing. Looking for help in these forums led me to the "Virtual Store" folder in the AppData directory, where my saves were. Somehow, they'd been deleted from Program Files/GOG.com/Baldur's Gate/Save. Upon copying the save files to the original folder, I restarted the game, but none of the save files would load. The game would shrink to a black square in the upper left corner of my desktop. I can start a new game, but I'm disallowed from saving ("Saving failed, quit game?") Any thoughts?

Might be an issue with installing games in the program files folder. If you can't save/load and have to start a new game anyway, do it after installing the game in an other directory.

I backed up my old saves, uninstalled, then reinstalled to C:/Games. Everything works now, and I can pick up where I left off. Still not sure, however, what happened to make things turn weird. Thanks.
