Hey, this is my first ever time playing Baldur's Gate 1. Out of all the D&D games, i have only finished P:T EE so far.

I am on that part of the game where i have managed to get to Tazok's encampment. I have figured out that to move the plot forward, i have to steal the papers from his tent. Unfortunately, whenever i try to do that the inhabitants of the tent turn hostile and i can't beat them. My party consists of me, Jaheira, Khalid, Ajantis, Imoel, and that Bard you meet in Belegost (forgot his name). Any advice how can i move the plot forward? I have thought about sacrificing 2 or 3 characters to read the papers and then resurrecting them, but so far i have yet to resurrect a characterso i don't want to do that

The Bandit Camp is probably the first encounter you'll have in the BG series vs overwhelming forces, and you need to adjust your strategies to compensate. By this point in the game, you should have access to AoE spells, either damaging (like Fireball) or disabling (like Web) that you'll need to use tactically to take out a lot of foes at once. Give a Wand of Fire to Imoen or Garrick so they can also help lob explosive death on your enemies. You can also try and tip the odds back in your favour by summoning monsters (by this point I believe you should have found or can buy a Wand of Monster Summoning. If not, your Mage or Jaheira can provide this). If you engage carefully as you move forward to clear the camp, you should be able to wipe out all opposition without any deaths.
The spell Horror might be of help
potions of explosion or fiery burning can also be of help
For a game like the BG games, you can't easily assume what kind of resources someone has access to just because they're "at some point in the game". It's possible to get to the bandit camp part fairly quickly and easily, when your party is still weak. Stuff like Wand of Fire and Wand of Monster Summoning are actually not easy to come by if you're new to the game. You won't find these in shops until quite later in the game.

Unless you're a mage, otherwise your party may need one. Not that mages are "required", but they have the power to even the odds when fighting against big groups of enemies, thanks to their aoe damaging and disabling spells.

For this fight, you want to take out Venkt (the mage) and Hakt (the hobgoblin) asap. Venkt can cast Horror and that spell is bad news for a low level party. Hakt can shoot poisoned arrows and with his special bow he is deadly at range.

Have at least one fighter close in on Hakt. This will force him to switch to melee and a well-equipped fighter can (probably) solo him in melee, and you can just let the two duke it out.

Have all ranged party members target Venkt immediately to take down his Mirror Image. Or better yet, if you're lucky, a well-timed hit can interrupt his casting of Mirror Image, making him much more vulnerable. Try to interrupt him (by damaging him) when he's casting Horror, so you won't have to deal with it.

IIRC the bard song which Garrick can use can remove the fear effect. If you can't prevent Venkt from casting Horror, at least have Garrick stay away from him so he won't be panic. Have him toggle on Bard Song until the fear effect is dispelled, then you can toggle it off if you want.

Have Jaheira memorize Command and Hold Person. These are life savers especially at low levels. You can cast Hold Person on the two melee enemies if you're not comfortable with kiting them. Otherwise, try Hold Person on Venkt. Using Command on Venkt may disable him for one round, making it easier to burn his Mirror Image and take him down. Keep in mind that since he's a mage, he has better chance at resisting these spells than the fighters.

You can go to High Hedge and visit Thalantyr's shop (west of Beregost). He sells Sleep and Horror scrolls, which are cheap and can be used by Garrick. These spells should make the fight *much* easier.

What level are you? Which class are you?

If one particular fight is overwhelming for you, you can always come back when you are stronger. There are lots of areas south-west of the map where you can get stronger by gaining more exp and better equipment.
I second Chest's recommendation for mages, as AoE damage and (especially) crowd control spells can turn tough fights into curbstomps. If you keep having trouble with fights past this one, definitely consider dropping Garrick in favor of a mage.

Hey i did exactly as you told me to but when i tried to have Garrick memorize the spell, it turned out he doesn't have a slot... He has 2 slots on page 1 but horror is on page 2 and it does not allow me to memorise it. He's level 3, doesn't have armour... What's the problem?

Use the scroll as a single-use spell.

Bards need to be level 4 to start gaining 2nd level spell slots. For Horror or any other spell of level 2 or higher your Garrick can only cast directly from scrolls for now. You can buy two scrolls of Horror, have him learn one, then use the other as a single-use item for a tough fight.
I don't even know anymore. This game is ridiculous. My difficulty is set to normal. Fair enough, i have bought horror scrolls and i use them to scare the enemy. But how the hell am i supposed to kill them? They run about the whole tent. I have tried to make Jaheira cast the spell which entangles them but guess what, my characters will also get entangled in the thing. I really like this game but it's so weird it's incomprehensible.
Ok i circumvented it all by talking to Ender Sai and taking the papers while all the enemies where in horror. Kinda cheesy but if the game fucks me up so much i have to travel half the map to buy spells and then have trouble anyways, i think i may allow myself to act that way. Though i still lost Imoen and Khalid and had to splash out to revive them, but then again the 2000 you find in that chest cover that easily.

I will mark amazing's answer as he obviously put a lot of time into that.

I know you're past the encounter now, but here's a few other ideas I was typing up:

If your Bard (Garrick) is level 3, I'm assuming the rest of your party is around the same level. Level 3 is a bit low to be taking on the bandit leaders -- they are around level 5 to 6. It's intended to be a difficult fight that requires liberal use of magic items, potions, spells and anything else at your disposal. Try gaining at least one or two more levels and make sure your party is well armed.

Consider going back to The Friendly Arm Inn, Beregost, Nashkel and any other towns you've visited - and talk to the townsfolk to find any side quests you may have missed (just talk to the people with names - you don't need to click every random "Farmer" or "Townsperson") . And check your journal to see if you've accepted any quests that you haven't started yet. You could also just strike out into the wilderness. Many of the more lucrative side quests are completely off the beaten path and can only be found if you go exploring outside the "critical path" of the main quest.

As far as tactics: know that ranged weapons are king in BG1. Each of your characters should start combat using some kind of ranged weapon (or a spell) - and you should try to keep your characters out of melee as much as possible, especially when you're low level. Difficult to do in the bandit tent since you're in a tight space, but out in the wilderness spread out and keep your distance. Be on the lookout for special ammo like Arrows of Fire or Arrows of Biting, and save those for the tougher fights. When facing groups of tougher enemies, order your entire party to focus-fire on a single target. Taking an enemy spell caster out of the fight early can make a big difference.

Your own spell casters should largely focus on defensive and debilitating spells early on. Magic Missile may look cool, but a single Sleep or Horror spell can potentially disable an entire group of enemies while Dispel Magic can shut down an enemy caster. You'll find wands of Magic Missile, Fireball, Lightning, etc. which can supplement your spell casters' offensive abilities while keeping their memorized spells reserved for defensive spells.

So, once you're ready to go back to the bandit leaders with a few more levels and a stock of magic items, a good tactic could be:
(1) Use all your defensive spells outside the tent right before you walk in so you're ready to go on the offensive as soon as the fight starts.
(2) When the battle begins, have your mage or bard cast Horror to disable at least a few of the fighters. The rest of your party should immediately unload with ranged attacks on the enemy mage (Venkt) to disrupt his spells and kill him as quickly as possible.
(3) If any of the enemy fighters weren't affected by Horror, have your mage/bard follow up with a spell like Blindness or Spook (or a second casting of Horror if there's more than one enemy that resisted the first attempt).
(4) Once the enemy mage has been eliminated, you'll want to focus on the hobgoblin Hakt since he uses poisoned arrows. Then take out the gnoll Britik, and finally the human archer Raemon. One potential tactic is to use Charm Person on Hakt, and then have him attack his own allies with his poison arrows.

Again, I know you're past the fight now - but you may want to consider leveling up with some side quests and trying the fight again later. In bypassing the fight, you're missing out on some good loot and experience -- and it sounds like you may be in need of both. If you're under leveled and under equipped, the next set of areas are going to get even more frustrating. I wouldn't considering entering the Cloakwood Forest until you're at least level 5 and have a good assortment of magic items. (Also... bring lots of Antidote Potions and level up Imoen's Detect Traps skill... a lot...)

That is not cheesy at all; it's a completely legit thing to do, and is actually pretty smart. You were able to focus on the real objective and didn't get carried away by the idea that "I have to kill everything". This kind of thinking is much needed when you're doing challenge runs in which your characters are at great disadvantage.
