Hello, my computer recently crashed and during system repair i was lucky enough to be able to back up and keep some files safe. One of these folders was the "save" folder in the baldurs gate file location. After I reinstalled my operating system and then reinstalled baldurs gate because the game itself was gone, I thought that I could just copy my saved game file into the "save" folder and play it again. It didn't work and when I investigated my recovered files it had only the bitmap image files and nothing else. When I looked in the mission pack file there were three different file types named baldur.sav, baldur.gam, and worldmap.wmp
I then thought maybe that I could just copy these in with my desired saved game file because I was not sure what they were and I discovered that it appears in the game as my saved game with the same name but when I opened it I found that it was simply a complete copy of the mission pack save file and that my specific bitmap images meant nothing.

So, is there anything that I can do to get my specific saved game back and what am I missing in the file because all that is in there are the bitmap images of the screenshot and my character portraits????

No, afraid not. Each saved game folder needs its own baldur.sav, baldur.gam, and worldmap.wmp - they have the actual saved data. The name of the save is taken from the folder name. And as you noted, the bitmaps are just screenshots.

(That must be really heart breaking, I've lost stuff in crashes before as well. This should be a lesson to everyone to backup your saves!)
Oh well, thank you for clarifying the situation but the good news is that I ended up scoring a much better roll for my character anyway after starting over
