i saved a game before leveling my fighter and i noticed when i level up my health increased to 27 but when i reloaded the game it only went to 17. are the stat increases rolled for like at the start and what stats does this effect

Yeah, under normal D&D rules you roll a D10 for fighters hit points so you can get between 1 & 10 hit points per level (plus any constitution bonus). The later games had the option to give you the maximum points per level (which is good, I once had a level 6 mage that had 9 hit points), there's a mod for BG that enables that option too, its called bgtweaks

thanks i'll remember to save before every level now
Can't recall the class levelling tables off the top of my head, so this may not come into play in BG due to the level cap, but at some point, you only get a set number of HPs per level and no longer get a die roll.

It happens around level 10 for all classes; only thieves, bards, and druids can hit 10 in vanilla ToSC. You'll hit it almost immediately in BG2, though. Warriors will get 3 hp per level, Mages and Sorcerers will get 1 hp per level, and Priests and Rogues will get 2 hp per level.

In short, if you're planning on importing a character to BG2 in the future, make sure s/he gets good hp rolls in BG!
