Hi guys, I'm not sure if this has been addressed (I tried to search) but I need some help.

I've picked up Xan in the Nashkel mines as my party's mage. Not knowing how the magic system worked, I just proceeded to transcribe all the spells in his inventory in any random order.

I later discover that there is a limit to how many spells can be in the book and now its full of useless 1st level spells like infravision. I've gone too far since to reload my game. I also can't seem to transcribe any second level spells even though I only have one listed.

So my question: Have I ruined this character for good or will I be able to add more, higher level spells as he levels up?
This question / problem has been solved by kmonsterimage
Mages and bards can raise int temporarily by drinking certain int raising potions to learn more spells per level than the int limit.

But I don't think that's your problem.

Xan is an enchanter, he can cast an extra spell per day and level but can't learn evocation spells. With his 17 int he can learn up to 14 spells per level, this should be enough to learn all non-evocation mage spells from scrolls (except level 2 which has 1 spell more).

just in addition to kmonster´s answer:

you can find wich spells xan can´t learn here

http://www.pottsland.com/baulder/create/create_unusable_spells.shtml

4th row is enchanters forbidden spells. the list is only up to lv 5 because you should not reach higher spell lvls as a mage in BG 1

on the next side under intelligence you can see your spells per int. so only from 19 on you can learn unlimited spells, or to clarify it yu can learn as long till your list is full otherwise you won´t have access to it because without a special mod you can´t scroll the list.

and if you want to get rid of spells you don´t like or deem useless, rightcloick on them in your spellbook and delete them. so you get that slot back for a better spell. you always can relearn a spell as long as you have another scoll of it (if you ever delete the wrong spell)
Thanks guys that really makes more sense now. I don't have anywhere near 14 spells but I couldn't add the chromatic orb.

So a follow up question: Many of the good offensive spells seem off limits for Xan. Is he still worth keeping. (I've got him up to level 3 at present) What is the best way to use an enchanter? What spells are his most useful?
Hi there , even tough Xan dont have some good offensive spells he does have good ones , i dont remember exactly now since i didint finish the game with him , eventually i got tired of hearing him say " our quest is futile " , or " why do we even bother " stuff like that xD , but wile i had him and i got him up to lv 6 he did well , still even tough you cant scribe some scrolls you can still use the scroll and for some reason in bg 1 and 2 i allways have more scrolls then i end up been able to use , because i tend to save them for important times ,and then when it comes the important time i forget i have them xD , if you can get past hes negative actitute hes pretty cool with a flaming sword and dont leave you if your rep goes to high like some other ungratefull people about you can met ;O
Xan gets quite a lot useful spells. The forbidden spells don't hurt too much.

The best level 1 spell is sleep, identify is useful, friends helps saving money, also useful are Larloch's minor drain and grease, armor helps until you can afford the best robe.

My favorite level 2 spells are strength and mirror image.

Haste and slow are quite useful level 3 spells, if you prefer dealing damage skull trap works well.

But which spells are the best for you to use depends on your playing style.
Can't you just right click a spell in the spell book (like the list of spells not the spells you have memorized) in order to delete it from your book. That way you can free up some spells.

Edit: Nevermind I missed that Sh4d3s's mentioned it.

Okay, thanks again. That's all reassuring.

I've already wasted his level 1 section so I'll just fill them with identify and one armour.

Maybe I should use more of his support spells. I'm still not that used to the D&D style of magic and most other games let the mages cast all sorts of spells repeatedly.

I actually find his attiude amusing. Reminds me of Doomsday in wing commander. I loved how whenever we encountered kilrathi he would drone "We're not going to survive this"
Hold Person is one of the best spells in all of D&D, too. It's generally far more useful than a damage spell, except on stuff that's not people (obviously). And he can still cast Haste, Slow, Horror, Skull Trap, Flame Arrow, and Web, all of which are highly useful against almost everything. Slow, in particular, has a -4 to its saving throws, making it EXTREMELY effective since most enemies will only save against it about 1/4 of the time, or less.
Unfortunatly guys you cant delete spells in baldurs gate 1 atleast i cant since i dont use any mods , and i have baldurs gate 2 and throne of baal in Cd's , you cant delete spells in baldurs gate 2 eather unless you installs throne of baal , so he is not goin to be able to delete in baldurs gate 1 , unless there is a mod that lets you do it like Tutu or stuff like that , i dont use it because it might sound strange but i love more how Baldurs gate 1 Chars look then how they look in baldurs gate 2 , and i dont know if Tutu would make the game look like Bg2 ,magic in DnD is diferent from other games that for sure PMK , but just read the description more then once if you need and in the end you will get the hang of it im sure :)

Thanks. I too didn't want to use BGtutu or triology because I like playing the old games the way they were on release. Having said that, I just had to use the widescreen mod, the constant scrolling as my party explored was too much to bear.

Don't know about tutu but in BGT it uses BG1 portraits for BG1 and then swaps to BG2 portraits for BG2 part - you can always just extract the BG1 portraits and stick them in the override folder if you want to keep the same look (I think that works whether it's BGT, Tutu or vanilla)
The UI has the BG2 look throughout for BGT though (so doesn't have the 'stone wall' look of the first - but if you like that I think there's a mod to change the look)
Hi Trollum and thanks for the little explanation but what i meant by the way chars look its in game not the portraits , alltough i have to say that i like Jaheiras portrait a lot more in bg 1 then in 2 and was even looking if there was a way to use that portrait in bg 2 but im a bit slow with computers sometimes :P , what i mean is the game looks diferent , the chars and everything looks bigger probably because the camera is closer to them then it is in bg2 or atleast thats the way it looks to me , so when people say it uses the same engine as bg2 i just think it probably looks like it so that keeps me from using those mods , the only im considering is unfinished bussines because i read it adds stuff that was left out of the game in the end .
Pmk : i havent even tried that wide screen mod probably because im used to playin vanilla bg but i can see how it can be a pain to scroll all the time wile exploring , the only thing i dont like about bg 1 is that the game dont pause wile in inventory ...Realistic yes but very bad in the middle of a fight xD , but hei i guess it is realistic since you cant say to a goul "wait wile i look in my bag for a scroll" :P
