Hello,
Since a few days my game crash everytime I try to open the map. Pressing M, or from inventory or a fast travel spot, my game always crash.

- I tried to verify / repair game files, still the same;
- I tried to completely uninstall the game, and folders, and restart a completely clean, unmodded game, stills crash.
- I updated all drivers, graphics card, windows and the game still crash, even right after a fresh install, on a new save.

I have no solution to my problem.

Up. Actually the same issue. We need a fix
one of the shadow settings seems to be bugged on medium (again...or still?). i think it was the cascaded shadows option. try putting it on low or high. it helped me with the same problem. it also crashes the game on startup in some cases, if set to medium. 20 hours in, no crashes anymore.

I run everything on hi and I have this crash, only crashes when opening the map.

When opening the map for the first time it's usually fine. If I change the filters, close the map back to gameplay, and then try to open the map again it will crash. If I travel far enough that new icons are showing on the map or if I do something that changes what icons are on the map like finishing a gig or job and then open the map it will crash.

I was having zero issues until just a couple days ago. Brand new playthrough started on 1.6.
was trying all the stuff op mentioned. even clean system install. the breadcrumbs in the bug report and only one recent post gave me a hint on the shadow thing, that relates to my case.

following different post on the subject, these crashes seem to happen under very different conditions (specs, timing..) and come with different workarounds.

one thing i noticed in my case: opening the map now eats up fps and spikes my gpu with 1.6.

1.5x worked totally fine for me, regarding that problem.

might be an extension of the dx12-bug, that keeps shifting while they work on fixing it, looks like?

one bug report already on its way...
ok so in graphics i turned off contact shadows and my game no longer crashes when i open my map

I did the same but my game crash again. Firstly i thought that is mistake on my side but how i see its not.
I looked on every video how to fix that crash but it wasnt exactly this problem.
Ok @proton15 is onto something in that it does seem to be related to shader/GPU issues.

I remembered that just before I started getting the crash I had updated my ReShade preset which also meant updating to ReShade v5.4.2. I reverted to ReShade v4.9.1 and my older preset and the crashes stopped happening.

Unfortunately it seems like whatever shader stuff they are doing when drawing the map puts the GPU into an unstable state. Whether you crash or not is dependent on hardware configuration and other factors. With out CDPR fixing/changing whatever is happening when rendering the map, the solution is unfortunately likely to be unique to each case.

Going to try updating to the new preset and see if just toggling ReShade off when opening the map prevents the crash in my case.

Edit: my hardware specs:
EVGA GTX 1080, underwater and OCed
i7 8700k, underwater and OCed
32GB RAM
WD BLACK sn750 NVME SSD

Same problems here, I've lowered and turned off all available shadow options, and set the fps to 24 and it still crashes whenever I open the map.
I can confirm that that those chases only begun after updating the game to 1.6 patch.
Same problem when i open the map or other menu (quest / inventory / skills...). I hope they will patch it soon '
Complicated to play

I just tried your solution but unfortunately it doesn't work either. Do anyone else play modded? I've already gone through several playthroughs but this was before all this new content. I did download the highest rated collection on nexusmods so initially I thought it was that.

I also notice that I when I did a search the only users talking about this are us here at GOG. A web search doesn't show steam or another, maybe this is a GOG only issue?
I do everything : modded, no modded, everything in low, pilotes updates but nothing change

Are you using ReShade? I reverted to an older version of ReShade and it fixed my crashing. I'm pretty heavily modded.
I was having this issue too after updating my reshade. Unfortunately the website seems to be down so I can't install an older version but removing reshade has solved this for me.
just a few additional thoughts. i might be wrong, though...

my guess from pocking around? there is a bug specifically in (cascaded) shadow mapping and somewhere
down the line of (initial?) shadow map caching. it mostly hits, when the scene is being redrawn
e.g. closing the map. for some people it seems to prevent starting the game at all.
it looks like others actually do have the same problem, but they don't even see the map and therefore
describe it differently. which makes it harder to follow...

the "fix" is mostly described as to clean dx12-cache and deleting usersettings.json.
guess this forces the game to re-chache at first start, which seems to work for some
people, while others need to delete dx12-cache and settings every time they start the game.

following some bug report breadcrumbs, things still seem to revolve around shadow mapping and/or an extension of the dx12-bug.

you know the "nuke"-bug when closing the map? distant shadows/lighting in general seems
to be a little off to me... its mostly noticeable, when that sandstorm effect hits the city. although it look cool :D
but that's also still a bug, right...? or is it a feature now... ;)

@Akira_R might have the right idea by trying reshade, if playing around with the ingame shadow settings does not work.

it might not fix the problem, but at least it might "smooth" out the cause?
also, for me an overclocked gpu worsened whatever is going wrong here...

please cdpr... hotfix... i am more interested in the bug right now, than in the game...
this forces me to learn something... its getting weird...

xD

edit: i actually started reading a book (!) about dx12 and cascaded shadow mapping... its math... why do i read math... xD
