Does anyone know what the character or word limit for user reviews is on GoG? I was writing a review for Neverwinter Nights 2, and it was still too long when I shortened the original 500 word review to 297 words.

Admittedly, 500 words might be a bit much, but I'm just curious for future reference, and I wonder if it is possible to increase the maximum length of a user review.

Apologies if this issue has been brought up before.

I can't help with the actual problem but for the NWN series 500 words is NOT a bit much. They are huge games and require huge reviews. I could spend 500 words on the sidekicks alone.

I just ran into the same issue myself. I wrote a review, and had to cut it down so much that I doubt it even makes that much sense anymore. I know I've written wordier reviews than that in the past...has GOG made a change to review character limits recently?

edit: I was also writing a review for NWN2.

I just wrote my first review, which was for Miasmata. I had to heavily edit it, which was a shame as the game had a big impact on me. The most popular review for the game, which was written in late 2011 is over 10 times the length of my now deeply cut review.

Whats just as frustrating is that the error message doesnt even tell you the actual maximum length so I actually had to guess through trial and error. I ended up editing my review about 5 times, each review being less coherent and containing more typos than the last.

It was my first review and will almost certainly be my last.

Based on my trial and error, it looks like it is a ~1500 character limit (including spaces). Trying to review System Shock 2 in 1500 characters or less is a challenge I'll tell you.

Okay GOG, this is completely ridiculous.

I know from past experience that there is no way to edit a review once it has been posted -- the original accepted submission is permanent -- so let me assure you that the error message indicating that the review I've submitted is "too long" and that I might like to make it "shorter", with no indication of how much shorter it needs to be is nothing short of infuriating.

I just spent about a half hour gradually editing a review down in an attempt to appease this mystery limitation, and all I could do each time was find some text to trim or reword, try submitting it, find some more text to trim or reword, try submitting that, over and over and over and over again. You can't post something short to establish the limit and then work to that, because as soon as a version is accepted you can't change it, so each and every attempted submission needs to be edited into a coherent review, even if it's a completely wasted effort.

I can also assure you that the smiley at the end of that error message only adds insult to injury -- as if you are actually laughing at us, as we get more and more frustrated.

My final review is considerably less useful than the original one, and the whole experience was incredibly frustrating, so I don't believe I shall ever write another review here again unless I hear that (a) you have increased the character limit, (b) you actually tell the user what the limit is (and ideally how far over it they are), and (c) you allow at least some short-term editing of reviews, so that simple typos and errors can be corrected.

As it stands, this feature of the site is absolutely horrible.

I had a similar experience when wring a review for Hocus Pocus

GOG needs to remove these limits or at least show how many characters you have left to type in
GOG needs to remove reviews from people who have never played the game. I'm looking at that new zombie indy and wanted some take on it but most of the reviews are from people who haven't played it! That's no help!

I have given up on the reviews all together they seem pointless and out of touch. Mainly because many of them are either written by someone who played the game aons ago on another system and another unpatched version or just by someone who heard of them. I for one could write a hatefilled and ugly review for Baldurs gate enhanced version (May it never enter GOG) because I genuinely think it is a rip of but I don't own the game and never will for that matter unless someone throws it at me. My opinion on the gameplay would be irrelevant though as I have only played the disc version I own (patched and modded of course) same goes for other games I own on CD. It should only be possible to submit a review if you have the actual GOG version in your game library.

I can't be assed to review games anymore because of the undisclosed word limit, and getting no error message last time I tried.
I have no idea why they put in a limit, but its beyond annoying. One of my older reviews was over 3000 characters, now a 2000 character review is rejected.

This is not the way to do things.
The limit is 1500 characters with spaces, of course I found out this via trial-and-error... The actual / maximum characters of the review would be VERY helpful in the error message! Oh, and double the limit, too.
If anything, you should keep reviews from being too short, GOG, not the other way around.

I agree. It's frustrating to write something sensible only to discover that I it's too much.

The character limit is restricting. It's impossible to write down pros and cons with reasoning this way. I always had to cut parts which made it harder to read or I had to leave the important things out. And a side effect is that I started thinking it's better to keep it short and simple like "It has okay gameplay and fine music."

I wrote Assassin's Creed review and had to crop it a lot. The final length recognized by GOG has 1 487 characters. So I guess the limit is 1500.
