skeletonbow: They just made a poor choice for that one game, and IMHO they deserve some flak for that. I doubt that they were completely stupid though, personally I have suspected they did this to deter piracy thinking people would be less likely to pirate a game that was 50GB, but that is speculation.

joppo: "See, if you're a smart pirate you won't want our bloatware in your system. That's a punishment that we only want to inflict in our loyal paying customers."
Precisely! Which would be 100% in line with their decision to put DRM on the games as well, punishing loyal paying customers. They've formed that decision making process in a habitual manner. :)

wpegg: It got me thinking - with the digital download market becoming so prevalent, but these games adding more and more high res content, how big will they get?
There's no end to this cycle and frankly I hate it. It's like life style creep for people who become financially successful the minimal living cost almost always increase in proportion - getting rid of the cycle is the goal in my opinion regardless of area otherwise the natural state of resource / demand ratio is still naturally skewed. It seems the point of civilisation is to overcomplicate things and add more cycles. Ugh! Big ugh!
I think it's retarded. Is there a need for splashed out graphics the size of a movie theater screen? The last Triple AAA game I bought was Dragon's Age Inquisition, and the installation size was around 26GB, and it looked terrifically gorgeous if you tune the graphics up to ultra. So, at a heightened point, twice that size would suffice (DAI is a decently sized open-world title, with a lot of land area and quests to do).

Another point, is due to the corruption of internet services in a lot of the west (and lack of modernization in the 2nd/3rd worlds). Speeds are slow except in the city, and they charge you an arm and leg for it, with a lot of bandwidth caps. This is different from the top asian cities where internet is consolidated, speeds are optic-fiber fast and often sold in cost-effective unlimited packages. Because if everyone is able to have speedy internet, the size of games would probably be a further away concern. But that will usher in a new era of game streaming, the ultimate DRM. Heh.

And there are service plans where you can have only so much data per pay period. I've had people in Australia tell me how they were hitting their dataplan limits via youtube and skype calls, and they were talking about internet, not mobile.
