TStael: My bro semi-persuaded me to have a go at Nethack, but I'll find it cool and cheeky even at distance.

Firstly, he freely admitted he took any opportunity to cheat the system, including training the cat to steal - and trying to magically burrow away from the shop to another level after shoplifting in person (but not very successfully).

What really won me over was his admission that in desperation he ate his cat one, or twice - short-sighted tactic it seems, because it earned curse from gods,

But if food management is part of the gameplay, eating your cat should be an option. On hearsay I loved both nethack and my bro as gamer better for it!
If your pet gets killed by something, you can eat its corpse.

I believe doing so gets you a negative intrinsic.

From https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Pet#Pet_death_messages
There is no special penalty for abandoning or losing track of pets, eating your pets' corpses (normal penalty from corpses of the pets' species still apply, such as cannibalism for cat and dog corpses), or (surprisingly) for genociding your pet's species or class.

Smannesman: Weird, I definitely remember reading the same thing several months ago.
Deja vu.
An unfinished early version of this new update was apparently leaked some time back and distributed elsewhere. There were one or two posts about it on the official site.

I definitely read it here though.
According to Google there was a topic about that last year, I guess that's the one that stuck in my mind.
It also starts with "after 11 years".

That's a graphical interface which includes the game itself for free. You're paying for the game engine, not for NetHack itself (the current license precludes charging for the game for profit).

I think people in the community became aware of renewed stirrings in the development back then, but nothing has been released through "official" channels until this week.

It's also possible whoever posted back then did so after getting wind of the "release" of that still-in-development version, maybe even thinking it was a proper new release version.

Actually, the license does permit selling the game for profit. On the other hand, those who receive the game are allowed to copy and distribute the game further, and it is not permitted to forbid that.

The only things you aren't allowed to do is to forbid others from distributing the game further or keep your changes to the game proprietary.

It's a copyleft license similar to the GPL.

See the actual license at
http://www.nethack.org/common/license.html

P.S. Someone who has bought that interface should check to see if it includes the source code for nethack itself. If it doesn't, it is likely a violation of the license.

Easily, I think. But rest assured, he did it more consciously - like the characterization of a cowardly, vane, cruel mage was not a random design.

My bro is a cool and sweet gamer meanwhile. Especially the cat withstanding. :-)
