Hey guys, i heard about this site from a friend. I've never played an older game that wasn't online or multiplayer aside from one which i played when i was little and it was called majesty. I loved it, but then i got into MOBA's. ANYWAY, i was curious if anyone could give me some fantastic ideas for what games to start off with, something that will like totally capture me. It'd be great, thanks in advance

Welcome!

Maybe you can start with letting us know what genre you like or prefer, and perhaps more importantly what you don't like, and then we can see how far down the rabbit hole we can take you.

*Edit: Perhaps it might also help if you list 10 games you really enjoy.

o.O Well, I'm glad I grew up when single-player was king. (and multiplayer was the occasional thing one did with a friend in splitscreen)

Now I've always wondered why so many find MOBAs alluring. How do you not get bored of that stuff? It's like repetition ad nauseam, and that's before you account for the somewhat toxic community. Is it because it's free? Hell, at that point I'd support kids pirating the good stuff instead. .... Ummm. /ramble

I grew up when multi player meant putting two quarters into the machine. :P

Honestly it is cause of toxicity! I think i might start with something like the witcher 3. I used to play WoW, SMITE, GW2 and Warframe. I just like Storylines, and something i can really like fall in love with.

I think the Dragon age is most similar game with Witcher 3 here. https://www.gog.com/game/dragon_age_origins

If you're actually willing to go for something older I also highly recommend . Much like The Witcher it's quite a dark and "dirty" RPG that feels genuinely medieval. You may get thrown off by the high difficulty curve and weird controls at first but once you've gotten past that it's easily one of the most awesome RPGs ever made. I think that to this day there may actually not have been another RPG that feels as organic and "alive" as Gothic. There are also official sequels and the [url=https://www.gog.com/game/risen]Risen series which is a spiritual successor to the Gothic series (although personally I haven't played Risen yet).

I think Gothic is a terrible idea for someone new to old games. It plays like a clockwork turd. I don't even know what that means, but sounds about right. Ig grew up playing old games back when they were new, and now often play for the first time some very old games that I didn't get to play back then for some reason, and still I could never get into Gothic.

Some ideas of mine:

RPG
Knights of the Old Republic- if you like Star Wars and are looking for a good story, it doesn't get better than this.

Legend of Grimrock- not really on old game, but a perfect way to get into old-school RPGs. It looks good and is easy
to pick up for new players, but it plays like classic duneon crawlers.

Fallout- despite it's age it's still a great game, and it's much more accesable I think than the D&D based classics like Baldur's Gate and Torment. Great world, good story, it's worth sining your teeth into.

Strategy
Heores of Might and Magic and Disciples series- if you have any interest at all in turn based strategies (mixed with RPG elements) then those are the absolute best games you could find.

FPS
TRON 2.0- probably the best and most unique first person shooter ever. Graphics still hold up, the level design is great, asis the entire world and story, and gameplay is just perfection.

Medal of Honor- a true classic and for a reason. It aged very well for the most part, and the Battlechest edition on GOG is truly a treasure trove of content, with expansion packs I think even better than the base game.

EDIT: Oh, and I have no idea if you have any interest in adventure games, but the Monkey Island games are a gem that everyone looking into classic games should know, and the new Special Editions make them very friendly to new players, with full voice acting, better interface and a hint system to help out in case the more insane puzzles give you a hard time.

If you are serious about playing old games, I suggest you start from the very oldest GOG games first, and then work your way up from there. So start with this game. It is free too so it is totally risk free.

For some quite time Team Fortress 2 (an online shooter) has unfortunately eaten too much of my active gaming time, but fortunately I am once again getting bored with it, and also the damn cheaters that Valve just doesn't seem to be able to kick out. So lately I've been more interested in e.g. Fallout Tactics, than starting up Team Fortress 2.

If you like point-and-click adventures, buy Pajama Sam Vol. 1 ;)

I've had fun with

Far Cry,
Tron 2.0 (though I don't own the GOG version),
Rayman 2,
Postal 2,
Serious Sam,
Unreal Gold,
Beyond Good and Evil,
Carmageddon,
Tomb Raider 1,
SiN Gold,
Redneck Rampage,
Monster Bash,
Shadow Warrior,
Flatout,
Jedi Academy,
Bio Menace (free!),
Medal of Honor Allied Assault

(If the Duke Nukem games were still here I'd recommend Manhattan Project and Duke 3d) I have a ton of unplayed games too.

I tend toward the action side of things, so here are some of my picks:

Stalker series, currently on sale. Not that old so it won't be a big 'culture shock' if you're new to old games.

If you have a joystick, then Independence War 2 and the Freespace games. Space sim goodness. Descent series if you have a strong stomach versus motion sickness.

Mount & Blade games. Sandbox-y games with lots of sword and spear and steed action. Currently playing Warband again.

Coming from MOBAs... maybe Total Annihilation? One of the defining games of the RTS genre, in my opinion. Not sure how well they compare though - I haven't dived into MOBAs myself.

Well, there you have it, you couldn't get into the game while millions of other players could, despite game's flaws which frankly weren't much more forgivable back in the day than they are now. And really, most of the game's problems are ones that you quickly forget about IF you happen to be someone who the game simply appeals to. The control scheme is really more weird than bad and actually decent once you've gotten the hang of it, the crazy difficulty curve is only really an issue in the beginning and otherwise I'd say that the game has actually aged very well. The quest design remains pretty strong, despite a lack of quest markers it's quite easy to find your way around, the presentation is still endurable and all the cool unique features that made the game mindblowing back in the day remain quite unique to the series to this day. Gothic is simply one of those "love it or hate it" cases but popular and successful enough that one can safely recommend to at least check it out, especially if someone expresses willingness to dig around in older titles. And it has certainly aged better than many other arguably better titles from its day.

This post reminds me of my teenage.
It was December 2007.
I was at a store after my classes looking at gaming magazine.
What caught my eye was it's DVD cover.
It had Crysis DEMO.
I read about it in school and it game me goosebumps (because I was so noob that even game demo used to excite me).
Didn't have enough money at that time so dropped the idea of buying that magzine.
At that time Crysis was a big deal.
After two years while helping our school librarian I found same DVD in minted condition.
I asked for it and he gave it to me.
That was one of my best life moments.
Can't believe that Crysis has become "old" now and I actually own FULL GAME!!!

Here is a screenshot. Lost the original casing though.

Lol, I'm mostly intrigued by the "enthralling predecessor to Portal". Never heard about it. Would you mind checking its title?
