Protect me from this world of sin

Requiem: Avenging Angel, a fierce FPS of Biblical fun, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com.

We all know that Earth is a mess and in dire need of some order but those Fallen angels just went too far. Now God must send Malachi, one of his less unruly lieutenants, to free humanity from the totalitarian regime established by the overzealous angels.

Apart from his heavy arsenal, Malachi is blessed with angelic powers that can wipe out his opponents in a number of novel, if ultra-violent, ways, like turning them into a pile of salt, frying them with fire or electricity, or convincing their blood to try and escape their body. You can charge some of those up for even more potent results but also try less direct approaches, like possessing enemies or resurrecting them to fight for you. Malachi will also employ a form of bullet-time as he marches through hellish levels, blowing up hundreds of angry minions and abusing his divine powers, so that he can walk up to those smug Fallen angels and ask them if they bleed. Because, by God, they will.

Go through Chaos and rain divine justice upon your fallen brethren as Requiem: Avenging Angel, DRM-free on GOG.com.

JMich: Don't recall playing that many, so can't make a proper comparison. The game is linear, it is relatively fast paced, and the normal difficulty (Purgatory) was quite a step up from the easy one (Heaven). An enjoyable romp for sure, but not sure if multiple runs will be worth it.
OK, let me make my question a bit more specific. In fact, forget about the eras. Have you played any of the following FPS?

Blood 1+2
Doom 1+2
Duke Nukem 3D
Quake 1+2
Redneck Rampage
Shadow Warrior
Shogo
SiN
Unreal

Would you compare Requiem to any game from the above list? If not, were the enemies particularly spongy? Can you play it in a run-and-gun style or you'll need to usually take cover?
I played this game back in the day. It was kinda cool :D. Nice visual design of some of the levels.

catpower1980: LOL at the 3DO logo in the trailer, it's been a very long time since I saw it ^o^

I hope Retroism and GOG will go forward with those kind of "underdogs" releases ;)
They will. They are also planning 4 more games.
Why would god want to send some less unruly of his servants? Wouldn't more unruly be more appropriate? Or less ruly I suppose, if that even is a word...

/nitpick

Looks interesting, but I already have several FPS in my backlog, waiting for a rainy day... I'll have to think about this, never heard about it before so nostalgia doesn't work for me here.
The game card doesn't show Windows XP support... what gives?
Nice release. Never played this one, but always wanted to. Wishlisted for now, thanks GOG and Retroism!
I think I remember this one. I skipped it back in the day for reasons I don't remember, but it did catch my interest. I think I'll be getting this time soon(TM)

Finished this one some months ago (I should have waited for GOG's release because it's defnitely not the easiest old game to get running!) - and it was good. really good in fact.

It's flawed in some ways (everything feels a bit unfinished), but there are enough design and gameplay ideas there to keep you playing until the end. Even the story is quite good, at least its premise and background are. Definitely worth a playthrough if you like older FPS!
Meh...FPSs are not my cup of tea...Still nice Retrosim releases another game here.

From the above list, Duke Nukem 3D is the one I recall playing. The DN3D levels were more open, and they had more secrets to find, while Requiem has a structure more similar to Half Life (follow the map, do the objective, open new door/route to new map, teleport to new section etc).
The enemies on Purgatory weren't particularly spongy, and the shotgun worked wonders on the mechs. Headshots deal additional damage, and can one shot the easier enemies, but if you find yourself unarmored against a dual wielding basic soldier, you will lose quite a bit of health before taking him down. Thankfully, you do get a heal ability relatively early on.

Crosmando: Why do angels need to fight with guns :/
You don't, but guns are easier to explain than swarm of locusts or fireballs or blood erupting from every orifice in your target's body.
You can always go with resurrection (if you didn't maim the body) or inspiration (or however the mind control is called).

At the time I was a bit confused with this being Messiah with more religious themed games was released during this period, had the same problem where I thought Mortyr was Medal of Honor with the overload of WW2 themed games back then.

If you like Jedi Knight you'll probably like this game too, the first level is really cool.
Does this use the Quake 2 engine or something? Does it have native widescreen or a way to get it?

Ah, I remember I had a demo of this one back in the day, and I think my PC at the time wasn't fast enough to run it properly. *looks at screenshots and admires those state of the art 3D visuals* :D
