dtgreene: I could also point out that SaGa Frontier, SaGa Frontier 2, and Unlimited SaGa got horrible review scores in the US on their release, but I enjoyed the ones I played. (Haven't tried Unlimited SaGa, but I have a copy (with case and manual!) sitting around somewhere.)

Darvond: I can't imagine a game that fans of the series refuse to refer to by the proper capitalization (Unlimited) and has a 43 on Metacritic can be that hot.
From what I understand, Unlimited SaGa is more of an acquired taste. The SaGa series has always been unconventional, with all sorts of interesting and unusual mechanics (remember, this is the RPG series where only one game has XP-based leveling, and said game's remake removed that mechanic), and Unlimited SaGa is strange even by SaGa standards. Even something as simple as opening a treasure chest is complicated in Unlimited SaGa.

People have complained about tutorials in many games, but some say that Unlimited SaGa would have been far better if it had a tutorial.
I think there are a number of games that don't rate well that I like. But there are two in particular that are really hated by a lot of people that I actually like a lot.

Star Control 3
Outpost (the old Sierra game)

They are both older, but both have been extensively criticized. I understand all of the criticisms and even agree with most of them, but I still have fun playing the games. I bought them both off the shelf as big box PC games. I don't have a copy of Outpost anymore. But for sure I picked up Star Control 3 here on GOG.
Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon

It has clunky controls and annoying camera but after getting used to it, it's pretty decent adventure game with not bad puzzles and charm of previous parts. Especially compared to terrible BS4.

Enebias: Largely the same with Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines - many will hate me for this, but for every good idea there are 3 awful ones.
This would be more suitable for that unpopular opinions thread then.
