I had fun with it, but was a long time ago and I wasn't sure if there were other games in the series or by the same company that looked like it.

I just found a screenshot of the game I wanted to post instead, and modified it a little.. to actually find my copy and install it would have been too big of a headache. :P I don't think Tineye finds it and I'm not aware of any other good image search engine out there, should I just post or wait for the original poster to confirm it?

I think you can just post another one, no need to wait for a confirm every time.
Okay, I hope this isn't too obscure (but knowing me, once I say that, the first poster will get it).

I loved this little game!

Doh.

Well here are a couple more from the game itself. It was released I think in the early-mid 90s, I'm unable to get an actual date on it.

I found an emulator for Mac OS X and snuck it onto my Macbook Pro at work to get a couple screenies. Although the version I played was for Windows, I don't think that one works past Windows 9X.

That hulking enemy base was indestructible, I think. As you got more points you'd "level up" a la Tetris and get more enemies on the map at once. Random buffs and health packs would heal up your ship or give you things like that triple shot or a big shot or engine boosts for use in a pinch. When you took damage it'd be randomly assigned across different parts of your ship, and different parts of the ship could go out of commission but also get repaired while in space, or when you returned to your home base.

I'll post a different game tomorrow-ish if it'still silent. Sorry to hold this up.

I think it's Maelstrom X.
Nope, though I saw that game mentioned while researching the origins of this one, I think. Playstyle seems similar, I double think.

Okay I'm closing this. The game was Lunatic Fringe. It first debuted as an After Dark (Flying Toasters, etc) screensaver playable module on early Mac and Windows versions - since discontinued, though in that link there's a standalone working emulator for the game in Mac OS X, apparently. So I had to get screenies from a machine at work, as I don't have a Mac OS at home. Memories. <3

Here's a much easier one, I'm sure someone has played this one before. Should instantly recognise the uh, unique artistic style from this screenshot, if you do know the game.
