Maighstir: The English gender-neutral pronoun is "they". Make sure to use plural forms where applicable, such as "they are" instead of "he/she is".
timppu: For real? First time I hear about such way to hide the gender. So for instance: "Do you know the person who sold you that phone?"
"No, I don't know them." (since you are not sure about the sex)
Sounds an odd way to do it... Or if I am referring to you when talking to another GOGer, I should say "they wrote...", if I am not fully sure of your gender?
There are alternatives, generic she and he, one, it, etc., but them has apparently been used since the 15th century while other alternatives are generally much younger (zhe, (s)he, 'e, etc.).
One isn't used to mean a specific person as far as I know, but is instead used in the same way as the generic you (one should take care of one's own trash), it is generally reserved for non-humans (the sparrow lays its eggs in...), and the generic he and she can obviously cause some misunderstanding as to whether the generic or gender-specific variant is intended.
I generally use they.
Using the singular-plural actually works in Swedish as well (de), though it isn't as common as in English, and we have started to import/bastardise the Finnish hän as hen as an alternative to the gender-specific han/hon.

"No, I don't know them." (since you are not sure about the sex)

say the correct version is it's singular and others say it's plural.
If I am conversing to a single unknown being,I will use he/she as a reference.
If I am conversing with for instance Gog then (they) becomes the reference.
This can be debated forever and no reasonable out come is likely as each
person has been educated or taught different ways.

I just love how you totally can't rely on clothes sizes. Some of my shirts are XXL but in fact smaller than others which are labeled XL. Same with shoes. Oh, and one word of advice to my fellow Europeans: If you import clothes from the US, order at least one, better two sizes smaller than you usually wear. Because XL in US measures does absolutely not mean the same as XL around here, at least in my area. I once ordered a shirt and they sent a tent.
Why do these labels exist when they are totally meaningless because every manufacturer interprets them as he pleases? Why are there no real standards?

Yes, a thousand times yes. I hate shopping because I am a huge fat neckbeard to trying clothes on is a major no no, so I like to order off the net, but as you say XXL in one place is an XL in another. I find though if I just order from Jacamo I usually ok.Why do these labels exist when they are totally meaningless because every manufacturer interprets them as he pleases? I also hate shaving. (And not being freshly shaven). Everyone is different and its not easy/cheap/convenient/pain-free for some of us to shave... and some of that group just happens to grow hair like a dwarven teen wolf.
I'd also add how corrupt the mattress industry is. (and I hate bad/soft mattresses). Which leads me to how quickly/easily a brand new mattress will start to sag, but still not be covered by the sag warranty, but you didn't know because the one in the show room behaved differently... I'll stop there on this issue.
I hate how people define intolerance. a difference of opinion is not intolerance. Not changing my beliefs to mimic yours is NOT intolerance. Exercising the freedom to speak my opinions is not intolerance. I hate that the people screaming so loudly about intolerance are mostly the ones showing the greatest example of it... so I guess I hate hypocrites too ;)
But... I love Taco Bell and Chick-Fil-A... and Marble Slab.

dtgreene: Actually, I am being completely serious. For the second point, remember that not everyone shares your religion.
If I may, and strictly, IMHO, the onus for this is on the listener, not the speaker. I mean that universally, regardless of religion. If you use "God" to define a stick of butter, that won't offend me, I'll just think you are wrong. But if you expect me to demote my "God" to appease you, that is contrary to my religious beliefs. Its easier to accept that another is not of your religious beliefs than it is to go against the premise of your religion. In other words, I can accept and tolerate people that behave against what I believe, but I can't change my beliefs to appease them... otherwise its not much of a religion (and wouldn't net you the cool holidays) ;) Of course, you are entitled to your opinions and beliefs, I just wanted to offer the opposing viewpoint of your suggestion.

The overuse of the word 'awesome'.
My own overuse of the word 'well'.
The misuse of the word 'epic'
When people write "of" instead of "'ve" - could of, should of, would of.
Breadcrumbs in the butter.
That I live in the second largest city in Norway and can't get fiber.
Pick and mix candy where the sugar based candies have been mixed with chocolate.
Half boiled potatoes.
That so many people have a grossly wrong understanding of what freedom of speech actually is.
Getting old.
That the idea that a company's main, if not only, purpose is to make as much money as possible has become so widespread and generally accepted.
People that constantly talk, but have nothing to say.
Donald Trump.
When people utter 'confirmation words' (yes, uh-uh, I see, of course, etc.) to show that they're paying attention - in particular if they're part of a larger audience.
When people discuss celebrities like they are somehow greater or better human beings than anyone else.
How my own English skills have deteriorated.
Fish balls.
How discussions on the internet only leads to entrenchment and echo chambers.

Note that none of what I said in the previous paragraphs applies at religious events (i. e. at a church). However, separation of church and state exists for very good reasons. In other words, an event must not be both a religious and a government event. If you want to pray out loud, do it in a church or private residence, not in a government ceremony.
In other words, the issue comes when people: 1. assume everyone else is some variant of Christian (or other monotheistic religion) or 2. imposes their religious beliefs on the non-religious and those of other religions.
Edit: Another thing I hate: using religion to justify discrimination against any category of people.
As a side note, I consider Halloween (a pagan holiday that is widely celebrated today) to be a lot cooler than the so-called Christian religions (which tend to be based of pagan religions anyway).

I can't stand burnt toast. I loathe bus stations - terrible places, full of lost luggage and lost souls. And then there's unrequited love, and tyranny, and cruelty.

eh.. I seek not to hate anything but hate/evil, but I'll allow that many pet peeves mentioned annoy me too (mis-sized clothes, narcissistic egotistical insane behaviors in cars/malls/restaurants/internet chats - wherever, hypocritical judgmental types etc etc)
This whole thread though reminds me irresistibly of the old Boot to the Head song
and that some folks could stand a discipline like yoga or martial arts to help them chill. Maybe some old TV would help

A difference of opinion can be intolerance. Not changing your beliefs to mimic the beliefs of others can be intolerance. The problem is that our society today, has made intolerance an evil thing when intolerance is just a natural thing that can be good or bad depending on the situation. Everyone is intolerant of something or someone. It's how we human beings are. And it's nothing to be ashamed of. And it's GOOD to be intolerant of things or people that are evil. And it's actually impossible to be a tolerant person unless you are a robot or zombie. That is why, all the people who claim to be tolerant are really just claiming to be politically correct and are extremely intolerant towards those who are not exactly like them. And they are also hypocrites. So it seems you hate that some people are saying it's wrong to be YOU and that you should be exactly like THEM. :) Makes 100% sense to me.
