Windows 10 was talked about as the last release of Windows as MS were keen to move to Windows being a service rather than a product.

But you still have to pay $100 to be spied on by your OS...

Not sure Microsoft understands what service means.

Atlo: You can't run it normally, (Well you can, it just throws some missing *.dll'' errors) because it needs some spyware from Win10.
Oh? That's what it was then. I saw a dll error, but the client still ran regardless. Maybe I had to restart it after that error.

Bummer, but I guess I don't necessarily need to run the client on my Windows 7 PC. Just goes to show gaming clients are evil, and can kill all your games (that rely on that one client) in one swoop. Similarly in the past I lost my ability to play my Steam games on Windows 2000, when Valve just suddenly decided that Steam will not run on Windows 2000 anymore. That is where I got my real DRM-free and anti-client revelation, at least for single-player games that do not really benefit from a client that much, or at all.

Atlo: Support may have officially ended, but windows still likes to throw some surprise ''updates''. Got 2 recently.

One was the browser Edge, don't remember what the second one was.
Microsoft Security Essentials also still receives updates (Though you cannot DL it anymore). Info

Still have no idea what OP is talking about, though. I blame drugs.

Also, a liitle tidbit; bit the bullet recently and DL'ed the Epic Launcher.

That's what the f*ck it was, I initially thought the EXE got corrupted, go figure...
What the hell EG, unknown random chinese people asking me to be friends wasn't enough?

timppu: I stopped accepting updates to my Windows 7, fortunately just before MS apparently added some Win10-like telemetry to it in an update. For all I know, MS will add, if they haven't already, a nag screen that Windows 7 support has ended and you really should move on to Windows 10. I'm trying to avoid all that.

Then again as it isn't receiving security fixes anymore, I try not to go online with it unless I really have to, and at some point I will disable internet connectivity from it completely, and use it only for offline gaming (for games that work better on Windows 7 than 10). I also have Linux on that same machine which is for online use.

I can live with the Windows 10 user interface and get work done there or play games on it, but I still think it is a bit stupid and incoherent in some ways (compared to e.g. Windows 7, or even the Linux GUIs I use). Things like:

- Split-brain syndrome where some of the settings and stuff is in the old "control panel" like user interface, and some in the newer, simplified/dummified, user interface. Some settings are even in both. Incoherent.

- I still haven't gotten over it how bad the Start menu is compared to Windows 7 (and earlier), mainly related to having no subfolders in the menu. That makes it harder for me to find some applications in the menu, e.g. if I want to check what GOG games I've installed to the machine and what shortcuts each of them have. In Windows 7, I have one clear GOG.com folder under which my GOG games are, grouped together.

The flat Windows 10 Start menu is just messy compared to the multilayered Windows 7 Start menu.

Overall I feel current Windows 10 is under some kind of transition period, trying to move from the "old classic" Windows interface to something else, the modern UI. That's why it is currently so messy and incoherent. But I guess you can get used to its quirks, until they overhaul it once again.
Have you tried Classic Shell for Win10?

No such errors on 8.1 so the spyware you speak of is not W10 exclusive. ;)
They should make the UI more like Windows 7, Windows 7 is light years way better than 10 as an OS.

The only two things I care about from the Masters of the Universe are Skeletor and Catra. If you're using machine translation, I suggest instead asking for an English typing friend to dictate for you.

Well it does seem that 90% of the posts seem to go oke, i'm willing to take a chance with the other 10%

Darvond: You do realize that Windows 7 was discontinued last year in terms of public consumer support right?
Which leaves people in a bind...

Stay with an outdated OS that may be vulnerable (although I think MS will still fix the worst things, like they did with XP even many years later), or use an OS that doesn't even hide spying on you, may randomly delete all your data with a forced upgrade you can't prevent (has happened twice already) and is otherwise more like a "we own this machine, not you" smartphone OS.

I think going Linux would be the best way - if you can - and it's really a shame GOG doesn't support this more. Stil "too niche" to be worth the effort probably.

True - but it actually asks you if you want to enable it, and you can say no. Think of EULAs what you want, but MS - by their own rules - have to stick to those too ;-)

Wine has made amazing strides in recent times, but I know there are specific use cases that a lot of people seem to bog on.

- These days it's not that crazy expensive to separate PC gaming from internet access. Keep your Windows 7 PC offline and get a chromebook for internet e.g. (that only works if you don't play online multiplayer of course)
- Tweaking Windows is probably one of the best documented "life skills" (online). And with "documented" I also mean the accessibility to quality, easy articles/guides for an absolute beginner.
I just typed "stop windows 10 spying" in google, and the second result was this nice article:
https://www.geckoandfly.com/25083/free-tools-disable-stop-windows-spying-tracking-you/

"forced upgrade you can't prevent (has happened twice already)"
Sure you can prevent that. Have you tried googling it?

My requirement is Visual Studio Professional and SQL Server (latest version...). For work, obviously.
And IMatch... which I use to organise my photos. There are hundreds of hours in that too.

I use O&O Shutup. Has to be run every time after an update. Not sure if it really disables all of Telemetry. They probably aren't either.
It's hardcoded, it even bypasses the hosts file - that's rootkit behaviour.

The question is - do I want an OS that acts like a malware, that I have to constantly fight to not leak my data? Where I have to go out of my way to gatekeep it?

My computer is my externalised memory, it holds my knowledge, my creativity, and yes, my dirty thoughts too. It's the one machine I need to be able to trust. Win10 simply broke that (and the UI is still shit, too). Win10 is like letting a bunch of strangers into your home, and letting them sift through your stuff. Do you really want that?

Have you tried ACDSee too? I went with that because it was a lot cheaper...

I had stick with 8.1+classic shell, it's the OS tha give me less work, headaches and number of clicks to get things done. I only see the "hated" Win8 start menu once, right after instalation. It's just a better looking Win7 after some setup (way less than any Win 10 initial configuration)

There's one thing Win10 does very good: touch screen support. I can use nothing but touch with Windows 10 with on-screen keyboard and touchpad.
I tried several Linux distros and the only design I could find that could be remotly usable with touch was Gnome 3 as find on Debian and Ubuntu, however, it's slow as a pig's turd. Actually it's even slower...
Win 8.1 touch is ok-ish after being used to it's quirks and it's the only real option on low-spec devices, like the old MS Surface 3.

Just look foward to see the new update on a touch device because on a desktop, there's probably nothing new that I care about.

Did I mention Gnome 3 it's slow?
