I have two gaming perks that is quite different from others.

I usually play a game 1 year after its release due to the price drop and more imporatantly bug-free gaming experience with full DLC and expansion releases.

Also, I always play first game of a series; I played Arena, Daggerfall, and Morrowind before playing Oblivion.

This has made it difficult to keep track of game release news that is outdated. How do I check news/game release and their reviews 'as if' I were doing this a year ago?

What, you mean like getting people's first impressions of a game that's been out for a while?

I'd just search something like "first impressions [name of game]" or "[name of game] early review" in your search engine of choice (or on YouTube).

Sites like Metacritic also have links to (usually) a large number of reviews which came out at launch or shortly thereafter.

I'm not really sure what you're asking, so feel free to elaborate on your question if none of this is what you meant.
Well if it's in the Bethseba or a lot of other popular games, may I suggest going to the Nexus site. Also you pick up some mods for the games..Goggle search Nexus, don't know how to post the address.
I follow the same patern mate. I very rarely play new games for the exact same reason of them often being unfinished and also not to give my wallet a heart attack. And also as you mentioned, I play them in order.

Not really sure about your question. Just follow news when they come out.
Why not bookmark reviews when the game comes out? You could even sort them into folders by month/year. Then a year later when you play the game, you check the release date and open up that months folder of reviews.
I'm that kind of guy, too.
My suggestion is you start keeping up with recent releases (now) and wishlist them for the future.
If you want to find out about the great releases you might have missed. Just look at "top of year ####" lists, highest rated games, top sellers, etc.

You could try going to Archive.org, then typing in GameRankings.com in the search field, then clicking on whatever time period of GameRankings' review links you wanted. For example, if you wanted to see GameRankings.com as it was one year ago, you could do at this address: https://web.archive.org/web/20131220023539/http://www.gamerankings.com/
is a good place for games reviews and user critics. There's also a [url=http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/year/pc?view=detailed&sort=desc&year_selected=2014]section where you can see all PC games sorted by scores for any given year.
