The amount of misinformation from orcishgamer is hilarious. A standalone, physical, retail version of the original Super Mario Bros released on Gamecube? And for $20? Wow. Seriously... lay off the crack pipe, please.
avatar
orcishgamer: 20 dollars was the pre-Wii price, then, not out of my ass, but from the wrong timeframe, they definitely re-released a ton of these games, must have been on GC then, and were charging 20 USD retail, which is laughable crap.

Also, are you positive Super Mario sold for 5 USD when Wii launched? Because I had a launch Wii and that seems wrong from what I recall, I recall taking one look at the prices, saying "fuck this", and never checking their stupid store again. That's before we even knew the games were hardware locked.
avatar
SirPrimalform: Hmm, I don't recall them releasing any emulated NES games on the GameCube, at least not as standalone retail products. I think there were some NES games built into Animal Crossing?

And yes, NES games have been 500 points from the launch of the Virtual Console. I think that's $5, but I'm not sure. Yeah, the hardware locking is terrible though.
I think he's thinking about when they rereleased some NES games for the GBA. $20 might have been the price for those, I can't remember.

niniendowarrior: Let's sit back and see how it pans out, shall we? Then, when Nintendo's utter collapse and destruction is complete, you can pull out the champagne and celebrate.
I don't know why you assume I want to celebrate. Nintendo is pretty much bastards to 3rd party devs, I simply wish they weren't and am pointing it out as a fact, you know because it is, and you keep acting like I'm just predicting failure due to some deep seated desire to see them fail. The minimum sales threshold is just one issue, historically Nintendo has pulled all sorts of shit (N64 minimum runs with the highest per unit licensing cost of all consoles, for example). The lack of 3rd party devs didn't make any of their other systems fail or anything, they just made the available games for the system pretty anemic. When 3rd party devs really come through then you get something like PS2 library awesomeness. That's why it matters.

Their library, unless something serious has changed, will likely remain mostly first party titles. I'm not pulling out a crystal ball full of hate on that or anything, just going by over 2 decades of their behavior.

If it was around 2003 time frame and they sold in big black boxes with pictures of the original cartridges on the front, that's probably it. I am not mis-recalling the costs, the few places I saw them (Frye's, Best Buy, etc.) they were always 20 bucks. Remember, this is back when bargain bins existed and games like Freelancer could be picked up for 2 bucks. Everyone I knew at the time was pretty disgusted at those prices and considered it to be greed.

This guy? I had a GBA flash cart and an NES emulator, so I pretty much just ignored these.

I think I would have recalled a massive "GBA" thing down the side, but it seems like these had those big cardboard things, like DVDs did back then, I suppose as some sort of BS anti-theft thing or to make them easier to display. It could have been that inside.
I have no thoughts on the Wii U.
First orcishgamer, I have to clear this out of the way. I mention your Nintendo hate half in jest. Just so you know that I don't seriously think you want to drink Nintendo blood. :D

Second, I am fully aware that Nintendo pretty much was (and is?) a bully when it comes to third party developers. I am fully aware of all that. But I also recognize that Nintendo's president isn't Yamauchi anymore and Iwata himself has come out during the run up to Wii U that they cannot survive alone. They need third party support so to you, all I can really say is... just wait it out.

The machine and its functionality are tempting, I love what Nintendo is doing, but.... the feedback on performance is very disappointing.

A lot of us were expecting true 1080p (not the upscaled form we get on PS3\360) and 60 fps! I'm not a graphics whore but I like games to run smooth, I'd gladly sacrifice SSAO up the butt for steady 60fps. From the feedback though (and it's not all consistent) Wii-U is still rendering at 720p and experiencing performance drops on the third-party titles :(

Could be sloppy ports though.
Heh, it's a Nintendo machine. I'll buy it, eventually, a couple of decades from now :-P

60fps will never be a standard on consoles. Publishers and developers know that most people don't care and would rather use those resources for better graphics. The whole 60fps standard thing people talk about before every console release will be an eternal cocktease.

1080 is a better question. Will the next Xbox and PS look to 1080 as a standard? Or will they stay at 720p (or lower)? What they regulate will decide what companies do.

The last known dev platform for the xbox and PS contain an 7770 card(and people were told to expect faster chips in the next unit) the WiiU has basically a 4700 in it (add to that the WiiU uses a CPU not much changed from the 360's and you'll start to see why the WiiU isn't living upto expectations) both the PS and Xbox are now thought to have AMD x86 chips btw we should know more by E3

I was unaware that Iwata had said that, despite the fact the dude seems to have no personality and it will probably be painful to read, do you have a source where he speaks about it?

...they definitely didn't release them on the GameCube. As kodeen said, the only thing that vaguely fits your description is the GBA releases.
People are arguing about Nintendo's lack of 3rd-party developer support, though this is not good you must remember that the Wii had unique games at the time, for example Xbox and PS3 are pretty much the same except for a few exclusives like Halo and God of War but the Wii had a lot of exclusive game, massive compared to Xbox and PS3 selection anyway.

As for someone mentioning Indie games, didn't World of Goo start on Wii and the 3DS is the only console that has VVVVV I think.

I believe it's in those investor's meetings that Nintendo publishes. I would have to dig and find it.

EDIT:
Not the exact stuff that I read a while back, but close enough, I think.
