Here's an interesting article on release dates

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-11-23-why-are-we-stuck-with-games-being-released-on-a-friday

Most of it not unexpected, but it's nice to hear it from the people involved in the industry.
I was reading that article earlier today, its a very interesting read I must admit.

I remember going to chips and there was new stuff there for my C64 virtually everyday, you tended to get the bigger name releases towards weekends but the budget stuff by Firebird, Codemasters and Mastertronic used to land regularly and a few times a week. The rereleases of the top titles from about a year before and not forgetting their own new games released straight to the budget label.

It was literally pocket money prices also, £1.99 and £2.99 for a game on tape on those budget labels. New releases were £8.99 & £9.99 on tape and usually around £12.99 on disc.

I remember buying Bards Tale on tape at first for my C64, 2 90 minute tapes (45 mins per side) and it was loading all the time. When I finally got the disc drive I replaced it as it was just 2 discs. My disc drive was the Vic 20 one which was single sided and nicknamed the Breezeblock due to its comparable size but it was compatible with all their 8 bit machines (C16, +4, C128, C64 and not forgetting the Vic)

Ah.......Happy memories!
Hopefully the next round of consoles do digital right so retail can finally die.
