i'm pretty attached to my aerondight and cutlass that i got in chapter 1. now that i'm in chapter 2 i don't have any problem killing stuff, but i see the combat log saying "geralt deals minimum damage".

are there points in the game coming up where i NEED to have a higher base-damage sword? or can i complete the whole thing with my starting equipment?

One of the developers finished it using only a pick-axe. 'nuff said. ;-)

Did he use the pick axe just instead of the steel sword or used it instead of the silver sword too? Oh by the way pick axe deals much more damage than the swords you start with so it's not surprising if he used it just instead of the steel sword.
