vAddicatedGamer: I'm not sure if it is that useful. I mean against tougher opponents the books do not have anything useful to say. Like that time when I bought the book for Draug, and what useful information did I get? "The Draug does not have any weaknesses". How about the gargoyles? "Gargoyles have no weaknesses. Use the silver sword".

By the way, does anyone know what advantage you get from gaining knowledge about monsters (other than being able to complete the respective contract and the partially useful bits of info in your Character screen)? Do you get damage bonus against or damage reduction against or something like that?

keter47: yeah, the gargoyle entry was a bummer alright but i dont agree with you regarding the bosses.

i mean bosses like draug in TW2 and koschey in TW1 are so rare and so powerful that it makes sense that the books dont have much tactical info on them ( i remember koschey entry in TW1 was smthg like " its death , run ..blah blah blah ..." ) , you know kind of adds realism to the game world.
on the other hand i found some entries to be lifesaver atleast in early parts of the game like the one on those nekker bastards and how bleeding is their weakness.

and i think its sort of ridiculus to expect that your damage stats against a creature rises just cause you've read a book about them.
Well I don't know. But it is possible in RPGs to gain sort of a "perk" after reading a book (much alike to how you gain abilities in TW2 - hello, +50 carrying capacity for carrying a guy for 5 minutes?) since theoretically a book can detail all the weak points you can stab with your sword and hence increasing damage after reading books is not too far-fetched as it seems.

As to books on bosses, it seems like it adds nothing in terms of gameplay advantage (even though you "gained knowledge" about the monster in question.

taking your point on the ability , dont you think its better we get these abilitiesfor actually doing smthg like the Birdman ability. I think its better if you get these abilities after killing a certain no. of monsters ( depending on how rare or common they are).

yeah, from a Rpg pov you might say you should get perks and a lot of people will agree with u ..... but i dunno.. shelling out money to gain xp.......ew, i atleast somehow like it better this way

i got perfectly well wht u were trying to say and i just happened to not to agree with you..okk
and thats why i said its good to talk to someone who knows what an RPG is cause u obviously u dont or just not like the way an RPG is suppose to be.

Even fable 3 still has books being useful and we all know the go with that lol

Maybe I'm remember wrong, but aren't the books in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 pretty much useless in terms of giving you things? I seem to remember them being interesting, but not providing any bonuses or anything.

and i prefer to talk to to people with room in their heads for new ideas.
yes, games like morrowind , oblivion, NWN etc were great games but that doesnt mean each and every rpg after them has to follow the same approach and same design desicions.

You like talking to people with holes in their heads?

WOW, Id think that would get ... distracting! :)

As for books, yeah I get annoyed there no indicator if I read book or not already as well.
And yes its annoying there is no acheivement/reward/bonus for collecting all the books.

Id also like a sagely voice that reads the books (as its just portions and not entire books) just to add some flavour and immersion to the book aspect of game.

You know, click on book open and suddenly you hear Spock reading the passage of the book most important to you.

I think it would be a great addition in many RPGs.
The days of reading none stop in games is over and we have the tech and ability to add flavour like that!

Id also like RPGs to borrow a staple of movies and TV.
When you pick up a note or letter from someone, its read in the writers voice back to you.

Like movies and TV do for stuff like that.

Just little minor things that would go so far in immersion
