I read in a post here, on another matter, advising that a user should "check that his settings were set to best performance" or similar.

So I went I to (right click My Computer) System Properties/Advanced/Performance and set it to "Adjust for best performance" and now my Witcher 2 looks much better!

Talk about wringing the most out of a low-end system, I have an Nvidia 9800GT/1KRAM that I run on low setting.

Thought I would bump this tip,

By "looks so much better" you mean "runs so much better", I suppose?

Is it really noticeably smoother? I don't see how these options would have any impact on an application... But then again, PCs are quirky creatures sometimes.
..........sorry I should have been clearer - the graphics LOOK better, no noticable change in smoothness. With no other changes but the Performance setting in Windows, the colors are more clear and pure, there is more detail, like that I get on the next setting up from low (which I don't use - CPU/GPU overheat ).
.....maybe you're right and it's just me or maybe someone will post their similar experience,
