I wanted to install The Witcher 2 on my spare system with Win XP on it. Tried it two times, second time as admin. I have the GoG version and the installation goes well until the end of the activation patch. It then says "patch successfully installed" - and then freezes. When I click on OK, nothing happens, i need to kill the proccess with task manager.

When I try to apply patch 1.1 (GoG version), it says "Failed to open package file ..\The Witcher 2\Cooked PC\pack0.dzip"

When I try to start the game I get errors:

"Unable to load cooked 'globals\controls.csv'. Make sure resource was gathered and check log for details."

"Unable to load cooked 'globals\game_inputs_order.csv'. Make sure resource was gathered and check log for details."

"Unable to load cooked 'globals\attribute_types.csv'. Make sure resource was gathered and check log for details."

"Unable to load cooked 'globals\sound_materials.csv'. Make sure resource was gathered and check log for details."

"Unable to load cooked 'globals\music.csv'. Make sure resource was gathered and check log for details."

"Unable to load cooked 'globals\gui\fonts\fonts.csv'. Make sure resource was gathered and check log for details."

Then a black window called "Error".
The End

Sorry if the problem came up before, but "XP" is not a word you can search for.

Don't apply the activation patch (if it's automatic, disconnect from internet during installation) is what I'd try first. Install 1.1 right away instead.

Smells a bit like an install error. I'd try a re-install. OS version should not have anything to do with this. I really looks a bit like the patch cannot find the needed files to bring up to date.
Like I said, I did it twice and the same error occured both times.

Has anyone ever got the game to work without the activation patch?
I thought that was some neccessary game data (not included in 1.1). I can try that, but... if patch 1.1 won't install after a supposedly successful activation (activation!) patch, I don't picture it doing it without. Well, I'll know more in another half an hour.

Oh, I have another idea... I have the hd with the witcher installation on the other pc right here in an external case... gonna try and copy the files and see what happens.

The ancient one agrees since his game plays flawlessly on XP sp3. AMD Phenom x3 720 unlocked to 4 cores, ATI Radeon 5750.

The purpose of 1.1 was, among others, to overcome the problems with activation many people had. So, well, I picture it doing it without the activation patch. :p
I am playing on XP, using the GOG version, played non-registered, registered; installed all patches when they came out... no issues.

This may sound silly (or it may be silly), but have you checked disk space and tried defragging the HD? A lot of somewhat similar issues I've gotten in the past, have been fixed by getting some HD space freed and defragging.

On a funny side note:
I play COD MW multiplayer with my kids at home. After I installed W2, MW no longer works. Maybe W2 is trying to tell me something :)
Hah! the copy trick worked. Fully patched (and modded) game on my system disc now. Which has 450GB of 500GB free space (was a fresh installation).

So, do I mark my own message as the answer? That is so embarrassing, you never find the solution unless you tell someone about the problem and then it just comes to you... *duck*

Hm... war games not for kids perhaps? And Geralt is very protective of the little ones, as you know. ;)

Well, now let's see what I can squeeze out of that old dualcore (with GTX460, what a mismatched couple, lol).

Hey, I am in the Good Ol' US of A... Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition... ( and don't forget the Jack) :)
If you copied the game files from another HD, you might run into issues related to missing registry files that are added during the normal installation.

From my own experience, the video options configurator does not work and patching can be troublesome if you don't install the game properly.

Just something to keep in mind.

I know. And that is why I didn't uninstall the game that last time, but just deleted the game files (NO, I don't usually remove apps that way). Because the patch didn't complain about wrong registry keys, but not being able to open game files, right? So I figured I'd just let the registry keys alone and try my luck with copying the files. Into the proper install. And it worked.
