Hi,

played W3 until patch 1.06, no crashes, no parts of the plot missing or "broken" (as far as I could notice).
OK so far.

But then there turned up patches that (according to the postings here) did not always fix things that seemed to be broken, and further more these patches added stuff that I am not sure to actually need (like those weird acchievements, etc.).
So I stopped playing with version 1.06.

My question: does any patch later then 1.06 really add anything but cosmethics to the game (NG+ would fall into that)?
And - if there is a sooth sayer about - will the latest patch available be needed to play further ahead with the upcoming
"sequels"?

Well, first of all, achievements were in game since 1.0, they just didn't work properly and only concern you in case you're using Galaxy (which I assume you aren't since you're installing the patches by hand).

I'd say the most important thing which happened since 1.06 was performance increase and bugfixes, but it adds more things which are more than mere cosmetics:
- Inventory tab for books, and inventory actually tells you which books you have already read
- Sorting of items in inventory
- Item stash, I suppose
- Alternative movement system which you may enable in options
- Highlight of equipped items in repair tab
- Ability to pin recipes, which allows you to easier find their ingredients in shops.

Actually, feel free to read trough this. I'd also like to point out that you may freely ignore most of these additions, with the exeption of new inventory tab, which I'm unsure as to why would you not want (it really is quite helpful)

When it comes to the expansion packs and DLC, I think it's safe to assume they will require the newest version of the game.

At any rate, if you're still unsure, I'm pretty certain you may back up your installed files somewhere (just make a copy of the Witcher 3 directory), patch the game and if you don't like the changes, replace your Witcher 3 installation with the 1.06 backup

Are you sure that backing up and then copying the backup over initial installation process won't work? Sure, games saved in 1.07 won't be compatible (so it would probably be worth also making a backup of the Documents\The Witcher 3 folder, just in case), but I can't see any registry entries which would be tied to game's version.

Well, as for performance I've got nothing to wish for, and for the rest I think that knowing what books (those I not have sold or discarded already) I still have to read might be the most useful thing to have.

Means - if there are some bugs invented by any patch after 1.06 then it still might be better to kind "never change a running system" for this one fine feature (reading a message or a book immediately after picking it up works quite well so far, yellow star and all).
My save files are stored additionally (external drive), so if all things get messed up, I can copy them back at any time.

Anyway, thank you (and Tauto, also) for your reply, will stay with 1.06 and hope for the best...

I guess that with a "fresh" install (version 1.06 seems to be kind of the "base" actually right now) the back ups of the 1.06 saves will surely work.
Would not try to load a 1.06 version save into a higher patched game - caution first :).

If the sequels really will be needing another version number - well: guess that also the add ons will have the need for patches very soon, so this matter can be solved - hopefully - then.

I personally don't believe in backups of whole games as it is unreliable and with Galaxy being beta,plus W3 with it's problems and I might add being fixed.This sort of situation could lead to a complete re-install anyway.

I've been luckier than most. My saved games haven't bugged out yet with all the patching.. But I would wait till they have finish fixing this game. Some patches changes some stuff and may require a clean start. No point in lost effort playing when there is risk of loosing all your hard work.
