Reading that interview and especially the comments that sparked it hurt my brain. I hope Kieron and those commenters feel like idiots now.
I'm so, so going to play it...some day. In the meantime, I tried to see what's all the fuss about with Prelude to Darkness, but haven't had much luck in running it under WINE. If anyone else is interested, here's the link to the latest version(s).

Nah, the idiotization of gamers and (mainstream) games is full-on going on for years now. Some sparkles in the dark won't be enough.

Well, we've had some mainstream turn-based successes since then, most comments ridiculed the sole idea of making a turn-based game in 2007/2008, Kieron said that a game like XCOM isn't gonna happen again, at least not on that scale. In 2012 XCOM returned in form of a modern AAA game and achieved huge mainstream success on both PC and console. The idiots from back then probably remain idiots but at the very least they've all been proven wrong.

in XCOM's case though, the new version got "dumbed down" (not my words - its pretty well known to those of use who were fans of the original - probably to appeal to wider audience . just saying)
