Darvond: I think one problem with recruting potental moderators is that anyone who potentally would be a mod tends to have extreme ideas towards moderations.
Yeh, I suspect the most likely people to volunteer are also the most overzealous ones. Reddit seems to be full of power tripping mods.

It shouldn't be impossible to accept volunteers to only clean up the obvious spam, but then you need oversight. Someone to oversee the mods.. knowing GOG, they probably have no moderation log of any sort so it'd be impossible to keep watch.

Your account was registered back in December 2013. That's MORE THAN 2 YEARS before I created my account on GOG.
He has an old account, but he may have started only recently to write on the forum. I myself have started since mid-'22 to write.

For me definitely biggest hurdle when entering is the unintuitive structure and layout. Odd notifications, hard to follow attended threads and all seems just to be dumped into general discussion without any categorization.
avatar
JeniSkunk: The Community General Discussion area is where all the threads that are NOT about specific games/series, go.
To see all the games GOG has forums for, page top bar -> COMMUNITY -> All forums
On the all forums page, scroll down till you see "show all 3380 forums" click that, and wait for the full list of forums about specific games/series, to load.
Haha :D Thanks making me feel older than before :K
As others already pointed out, the registeretation date has nothing to do with posting/following the forums.

Actually checked and according to my game library, my first game is WARSOW, which isn't available on GOG anymore.

Well said and indeed. Which is another thing mysteriously missing from this forum, even a private rap sheet.

Reddit is HQ in SF, where the sidewalks are ankle-deep in feces, of the 2-legged variety. Need one say more?

NuffCatnip: Restrict access to the forum with a minimum amount of purchases or something else like that. Anything that needs manual input from a human being.
The spam is getting worse and worse.
I am against it because some have a gog account with only free games offered by gog for different reasons such as financial. And just because they spent 0 euros they will be censored on the forum, I find it shameful.
It also would lock out first timers or people who have a question about how to purhase or something similar.

What about having to have at least claimed one of the free games as a baseline? Surely the spam accounts aren't actually doing that.

I lost my initial account with Zoom because I didn't log in for over a month without so much as claiming a freebie, my account was flagged as possible spam.

I remember GOG introducing a posting restriction years ago. New accounts could not create a topic until they bought a game. I have no idea though, if:

1) The restriction could be bypassed by a giveaway (not just a free game, but a paid game made free). It's an interesting coincidence that bot spam happens during a giveaway period.
2) It is still in effect. GOG never announced a rollback of the policy, so who knows?

That is why I said anything that needs manual input would be good enough.
It doesn't have to be a purchase, that was nothing but an example.

Pretty much this.
People who are keen to do that kind of job, are probably not the right people to do the job.

Good moderators need to be 100% impartial.
Hard to find such people.
Especially, when they are part of the "community" they're supposed to keep "clean and orderly".
It's probably a little easier to find them "out of house" - but not by much.

In the end it all comes down to "who watches the watchmen?"

Especially when said community has contradictory or outdated guidelines. (No NSFW topics, makes actively NSFW forum topics about racy games...)
