Hey guys, I was hoping that I someone might be able to help, or at least find someone with a similar problem. I should probably start with saying that I have the retail version of the game, but, as corny as it sounds, this place just seems like one of the friendlier;D My problem is that I just can´t get the game to run ok. I have an Intel core i7 860 @ 2.8 ghz, 6 gigs of ram and a Radeon 6970 with 2 gigs of vram. I want to believe that this is not a crappy computer, but maybe I´m wrong. On low settings i get around 50 fps when I´m in towns, or at least the first two. When I turn up the textures a little bit to medium and some of the effects (not AntiAlias, SSAO or UberSampling) it immidiately drops to between 20-25. Is this a totally unnecessary post? Is this game just ridiculously, and unjustifiably, demanding on your hardware? I also should mention that I have the latest patch for both the game and my GPU, plus the hotfix for the GPU.
Install patches first. Update video drivers. There is a rule of the thumb: turn off all effects and set everything at low, turn on effects and other stuff one by one and see which one is a biggest culprit for the frame rate drop, don't use fps taxing settings.
Try turning v-sync off if you have it on. I've heard it can cause problems on some setups. Also, what drivers are you running?

Always v-sync off;) I´m running AMD Catalyst 11.5.

Have you installed any of the CAP's for the 11.5 drivers?
If you mean the 11.5b hotfix, then yes.

That may be the problem. Some people have had problems with the hotfix drivers. they rolled back to just the regular 11.5 drivers and things ran more consistently.

It's where I read about the driver problem. Took a while to find.

You should be able to play on Ultra settings (NO UBERSAMPLING) with those specs. High settings at worst. So something is clearly not right.
those settings should give you 50-60 fps on ultra without ubersampling. There's an option which i don't remember the name that let's you specify the memory you have in you vcard. Set it to high or maximum. Maybe you are leaving that option to low when upping the textures and effects.

Is a 6970 a dual gpu or single? if it's dual install the latest caps which will cause you some problems (semi light bleeding/no npc interaction bug) but at least you will be able to see if your fps improve until the next drivers/caps appear
Yes I should, shouldn´t I?:) I just noticed the strangest thing, too... Right after a clean install of all the graphics drivers, I get like 40-50 fps in a town, wich, considering what I kind of performance I´ve had in the past couple of weeks, is pretty acceptable. Then the fps drops after every consecutive restart of the game, until it´s down to about 20-30. That´s a frikkin´ 20 fps drop! And I haven´t changed anything. This game really creeps me out...

well, i had some strange issues with the game that i explained in another topic regarding low fps in some places where i normally get 50-60 fps at the same spot. Alt tabbing out of the game and reentering fixes it for me when this happens
I hate to be bugging you guys with this, but I reeeaaallly want to play this game:) Could it just be crap on my harddrive? It doesn´t seem like any single option significantly reduces performance, the game just does what it wants... I mean, it is definitly playable, and it looks good too. It just really annoys me...
you could try to defrag your hard drive but i'm not sure it's this. Some people claim it helped them with performance

The game is pretty CPU demanding also so make sure you are not running anything else CPU intensive when playing.
I have pretty much the same setup as you have, and I'm running the game on Ultra with Ubersampling off @ 40-60 FPS.

Is it a specific area you're having trouble with? Or both, say, the forest and towns?
Does the performance decrease DURING gameplay? For example, you start out with 50 FPS and gradually get to 30, without alt-tabbing or restarting the game.

If I were you, I'd try the following things:
1) Uninstall and clean all traces of my video drivers (with Driver Sweeper e.g.)
2) Install a different version of drivers (I'm running 11.4 Catalyst, no problems)
3) Run a chkdsk on C: and game partition, then defragment.
4) Reinstall game from scratch (no mods, no DLC, no patch). DELETE .ini files in Documents/Witcher 2.
5) If game performance is acceptable, start installing patches 1 by 1. Add mods after.

Please take these 5 steps and check back after.

Other things that come to mind are Catalyst AI, mipmapping, forced AA possible settings.
Also, if everything else fails, you can just toy with the .ini to hunt for a "buggy" setting.

Hope it helps!

to avoid problems, every option under CCC 3d feature should have all the "use application settings" enabled so you are not forcing anything via CCC
