So there are multiple Monkey Island games? Any suggestions for where to start?
Lol! I actually laugh at this.

Anyway, the first two games in the series by Gilbert are the best. I'd suggest to start there and going on to the rest if you like it.

The series timeline:
1990 - The Secret of Monkey Island
1991 - Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
1997 - The Curse of Monkey Island
2000 - Escape from Monkey Island
2009 - Tales of Monkey Island (chopped into five "narrative stories" that one has to buy separately)

There were also two special edition versions of the first two games in 2009 and 2010. Basically a remake for better graphics and compatibilities with new machines.

Alright, thanks. I'll definitely look into those :)

Have a sneaking suspicion DOSBox will finally serve a purpose on my computer.

You should get the remastered editions, they include a mode where you can play with old graphics :)

dnna: ...or not. It's triggering my motion sickness like whoa, time to see if anything can be done to change camera movement. Maybe I'll just jump straight to HL2...
avatar
227: Ah, I was afraid of that. HL2 is less of a straight shooter compared to the first, though the perspective and camera movement aren't too different. Do you have trouble with all first-person games?
Most of them, unfortunately. It depends on the camera. I'm fine with Portal, Left 4 Dead and BioShock (in fact, it is the only shooter that didn't make me feel nauseous at all - not that I play shooters much), and also some first-person adventure games, but those don't require quick mouse/camera movements. Even some third-person games make me sick.

Now I see people complaining about it on Steam forums. And they mention HL Source... is the the same as HL1?

Half Life: Source is a remade version of the original HL with the updated graphics and physics that the Source engine (the engine for Half Life 2, Portal, Portal 2, and tons of other games) is capable of.

Honestly, I would look on youtube for a 1080p video of Half Life 2 or Half Life: Source and see if the video was something you could handle or not.

And I'll definitely make sure to get the remastered versions of those games, thanks for the tip :)

Well, either DosBOX or SCUMM, actually. GoG is the Master of this particular platform, to which they remaster old games to be sold.

Dnna, I have never tried the remastered versions. Are they really any good graphically? Revamped like, completely?

Anarki_Hunter: Quest for Glory.
Gabriel Knight
wow a bunch of old puzzle adventure aficionados, those were the times :)
Gabriel Knight? Still got the original first game on cd (back in the day there was also a floppy disk version on sale, lol). It's such a shame that due to technological development games don't age well, especially with modern high resolution displays.

Gabriel Knight 1 IS still the best. I've played the complete trilogy and my favorite is GK1 and 2.

And it's just so happen, GoG have the complete trilogy in stock:

Wanna give 'em another shot?

Yes, the new graphics are still hand-painted, only in higher res. I believe you can switch between classic and remastered graphics at will. I haven't played them yet, but I did take a quick look and there's audio commentary (and achievements :p). Looks like a nice deal, especially for first time players.

As for HL, I have HL2 so I'll check if it makes me sick or not. I assume there won't be any problems since I can play other Valve games...

Aww, Gabriel Knight, I've been meaning to play it in FOREVER. I was so in love with Gray Matter that came out earlier this year and people told me GK is a hundred times better.

I'm starting to hate this topic. So many amazing games I want to play, aaaaa D:

Hmm... I definitely have to try 'em, then. It'd be nice to see the good old Guybrush in a new graphical splendors--and still able to switch to classic view at will to boot! Thank you for the recommendation.

Confirm. GK series are way better than Gray Matter. I've also played that, and I gotta tell you, somethings is somewhat missing in Jane Jensen's muse these days.

Well, my dear, that's what GoG is for, don't you think?

We could even petition them include some old games we want. Or even some relatively new games. If there are enough people requesting, I think they'd at least consider to put on some efforts. It's business, after all.

Can we petition to have more hours in the day? More days in a week? :(

I'm going to go completely crazy if GK is that better than Gray Matter. I cannot describe how obsessed I was with it - I understand it has a lot of flaws and it's ridiculously easy for an adventure game, but there's something very magical about its atmosphere and characters. Hell, I still keep a track from the game as my morning alarm.

Don't I wish, dnna. Really, literally so.
>sigh<

Gray Matter does have it's own distinctive charm. I don't deny that. I enjoy playing it, but not as I much as I experienced GK series. I can't quite put the words around what's lacking--maybe the atmosphere, some critical plot holes I found at the end of the game.... I don't know.

And if you really are that much into adventure games like I am, as currently GoG only offers old games--and if you have not yet know about it, you could check out this link for similar website:

http://us-adventureshop.gamesplanet.com/

It's specifically dedicate for old and new adventure games, sold at prices ranging from $19 - $29, accept regular paypal transfer, some of their games are DRM and some don't, but they basically emphasize on the philosophy of, "If you paid for the game, you should always be able to active it for your own use." So, one can install and reinstall on the same PC as many times they want.

Don't forget to check on their FAQ, though.
Oh, one more thing--just to be sure: I am NOT affiliated in anyway with the aforementioned website. Not at all. Merely a suggestion in good will.

:)
LOL :) Thanks for the suggestion, though. Their games are a bit pricey, I got Gray Matter CE (boxed) for the same price, shipping included. I think I'd rather stick to European retailers, but maybe someone else will find your link helpful.

Gray Matter doesn't have that many plot holes, most things can be explained if you're observant enough. I just wish the magic trick system was better (it was so dumbed down I didn't see the point of having it at all). Also, I need a sequel. Right now.

No problem. It's just an option, anyway.

Regarding plot holes, it might my subjective observations, then. And I do agree the game needs a sequel. I read in an article back in March 2010 that Jane herself wanted to do it, but it's all eventually comes down to the publisher.
