tapeworm00: I've played through BG numerous times, and I love the game to bits, but one of the things that frustrated me constantly (from playing on newer systems, I assume) was my complete inability to get a solid multiplayer game running without going through some really tiring hoops. The last time I tried with some friends about a couple years ago it was just impossible, probably due to different configs from each of our computers. Even Hamachi, which was usually reliable back in the day, didn't do it that time. What I'm trying to get to is: is BGEE worth the $20 if I want to finally get a multiplayer game running? Is it stable? Does it run well? I found the new intro a bit silly and all that, but I wouldn't be really playing the SP with this one, I think. What do you guys think?
I think a 'wait and see' approach is what I would recommend. At the moment, there isn't anything innovative about the BGEE multiplayer. In fact, a info box appears on screen when choosing the multiplayer mode in the menu, telling players that enhanced multiplayer will be added at some point in the near future.

So, yeah, I think you should just wait and see first. :)

BG:EE is not stable at the moment, it is buggy as hell and the multiplayer is not fully functional yet, either. What's good about it are the engine improvements and the extra content. I wouldn't buy the EE solely for the MP, considering GameRanger has been working perfectly for regular BG2/BGT/EasyTutu lately (at least in my experience).
I've only just started playing BGEE, but so far I'm happy with it. It's more stable for me than either BG1 or BG2 (the former of which would sometimes crash when I enter buildings, the latter of which bogs down horribly for any battle involving lots of magical effects). I don't mind the slow walk speed in BG1; in fact I prefer I don't have an unfair advantage being able to walk faster than the monsters. The lost cut scenes are a definite minus; but since I own both games I can go back and watch the cut scenes whenever I want.

Bottom line, if you're just getting one game, I'd get Gog's for the cut scenes and for DRM free software. But for a BG nut like myself, it's worthwhile getting both.

After one full day of fiddling with BGEE, my premature judgement is that one is better off waiting until the bugs are resolved and more content* is introduced. At the moment, I don't think I can recommend BGEE, especially with the price difference between BGEE and GOG's version.

* By "content" I meant both from the official team/developers and the modding community. My hope is that BGEE is more moddable than the vanilla BG1. I have no idea if that would be the case, BG1 has many excellent mods as it is. But I have heard that they want to make some features 'externalized' or something - I can't remember the word - but I hope it opens up new possibilities for the modding community.

And there is of course the very dismal looking hope of getting a decent BG2EE and possible BG3 or some other spin off. I have very low expectations though. . . let's hope the BGEE has learned their lesson. Don't postpone a release date and finally release a buggy game that many can't even start. That just reflects really poorly, IMO.

BGEE should be a lot more moddable. A lot of things were un-hardcoded. So modders can now mod things that were un-moddable before.

Thanks for the response! That last time I tried MP I did so with GameRanger, and while I and a friend were able to get into a game, our other three buddies couldn't, so that was sad (probably all our different configs, etc.). Anyway, I guessed that given EE's support for newer platforms, it would have a solid MP capability, but well, I think I'm gonna wait for a while before buying this. Thank you!

@tapeworm00

I would wait. Multiplayer was supposed to be one of the strong points of the BG:EE. Many are reporting that multilayer does not even work. When I here on the official forums that it's fixed I'll let everyone know here.

Update: Whoops seems you got your answer. Your user name makes me wonder if you have taken Parasitology.

Thanks for your answer anyway :)

I'm not an MD or anything, but I once read a book called Parasite Rex, I really loved it and it made me... well, I wouldn't say fascinated with parasites, but it did made me hold them in high regard, so to speak, haha. Regardless, I've always wanted to play a game about parasites... I think it would be awesome!

Haha that's really cool. I loved Parasitology. It was one of my favourite classes at university. In Canada though Parasitology is sort of useless. I imagine in the tropics and perhaps were your from there would be more use for someone who has knowledge about parasites.

I did good in the course but sadly I don't remember half the stuff any more as it was about 3 yrs ago that I took it. Definitely parasites are very interesting though. Beware of sushi!

I think a game based on a world of parasites would be cool. You could play as a leukocyte against a Entamoeba histolytica. Though the white blood cell would probably loose lol.
There's been a major update to BG:EE.

Should fix a lot of peoples problems. Here is the link showing the changes.

Well, after saying nice things about BGEE, the game started freezing on me. I can't even get past the loading screen. I posted a request for help 24 hours ago on their support forums, and so far there is no reply. Oh well.

P.S.
Ok, I was able to bypass the update screen and am playing the game, though can't download updates. I'm still enjoying it, but would only recommend it to someone who'd already played the original version.

I rather rashly picked up the ipad release the first day it showed up, and it really struggles when you've got a big party in combat running their scripts. Your team and even the enemies regularly forget what they're doing and just stand there. Trying to just cross the screen from one side to the other can require many attempts.

I figured I'd play the ipad release since the pc version can't run with mods yet. I should have just ignored this thing entirely.

So you have both the iPad and PC release of BGEE? How do they compare? Does the iPad come with many system tweaks or are you able to modify any sort of INI file? I know that the game works better for me if I tweak around some settings in my graphics options and video card (which I arguably shouldn't have to do in the first place, but it is what it is).

Pre-release this kind of thing was on the cards for the ipad version, it sounded like they had it working. Then just before release the app was knocked back by Apple again and again. With the current version you cannot get at the ini file, you can't even export or import saved games with itunes.

With any luck it will be possible to open up the app and tweak/import with something like Phoneview (allows you to play with the guts of apps), but I've not tried it yet. Maybe now...
BG Enhanced Edition is crap. I just spent a week and a half trying to get it to work on my windows 7 pc. That was time that the makers took from me. I really tried to get it to work, I went to support. They said that they 'might' get it to work in the next couple patches. Might, lol.

They failed to offer their product the day it came out. Over 50% of the people that bought it doesnt work for them.

They are all a bunch of scum bags if you ask me.
