KoreaBeat: I'm in favor of remakes that genuinely bring something new to the table, such as when the original's graphics or UI have aged poorly, and that respect what was good about the original.
If a game is popular enough, modders do just that without asking money.
(Yes, Ubisoft, I'm looking at your announced Heroes 3 remake).
I assumed Microsoft and Sony got in with publishers to not make their consoles backwards compatible (of course, that's not true) so that games like GTA V can come out on consoles one year and then all of a sudden the next year "oh, gee, well it really is better on the new consoles anyway, guys. You should get one there as well." And i would find it very hard to believe if most people on the new consoles didn't already have it on the old ones.

ThePunishedSnake: So, I know probably this will be an unpopular post, but the trend of remaking one-year old games is very bad.
And is going out of hand.
Why? Because developers try to sell the same game twice to user fanbase.
I explain it. One thing is releasing a game, by communicate "This game will be available for XBox 360, PS3 and later for One and PS4".
Another thing is doing a version of the game, then after less then one year communicate a new version with "exclusive feature" (of couse you won't say what those features are) will be out shortly.

Is the case of FFX/X-2, and yet SE said nothing about a PC port. Why? Because eventually they will announce it after console version, so people will triple dip (not all people, luckily, but a good chunk will, sadly).

This case is just hilarious, because FFX and X-2 are PS2 titles, already enhanced for PS3. How can you make them better? But hey, there are a lot of Final Fantasy fans out here, so let's milk them.

And this is the reason why SE is releasing a PSVITA port on PS4 (Type 0) for 71€, giving away "for free" a FFXV demo.

Another HD port, this time VERY expensive, because it contains...a demo. Yeah.

Finally there's the FFVII port. First on PSX, later on Steam, with cloud support and achievements, now...on PS4. A port of a port.
And they price will be highest compared to PSX version on PSN, of course.

Here I talked onl of SE stuff, but it's plenty of similar cases. Last of Us Remastered, Masterchief Collection (so buggy that Microsoft will give several bonus as apologize, in form of one month of Live and other in-game items), Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider, Teraway Unfold,

I didn't include here the Resident Evil remake because that version of the game was available on Gamecube only, so having it on other platforms is a great thing. I'm speaking about re-releasing "new" games on multiple platforms, really without a reason. Some say "Yeah, but I didn't own a PS3, so having those remakes on PS4 is a good thing". But is it?

I mean, buying, let's say, 4 of those remasters will cost you 200€ (in example). You can buy a PS3 system for 100-120€ and buy with remaining money the original version of those remasters. Plus, you'll own a system with a great library.

Was good release HD remakes on PS3 for PS2 titles, because most of them was so rare and expansive...just look at MGS saga, Team Ico games etc.
Those collections were cheap, includes multiple titles in one disc, and can be played on modern tv systems (try to play a PS2 title on PS2 on a modern tv, they just look horrible).

There's also the case of software house releasing under payment the same title on the same platform, not offering an upgrade.
Guacamelee and Ares are two titles that did that, but even AAA titles like Dark Souls 2 will see a new version, DX11 based, that need to be bought even for those already own base version of the game. So, what do you think about this trend?
If you want to play a ps2 on a modern tv, get a component cable. Problem solved. My ps2 looks great on my 42" hdtv.

Why are you so worried about how other people spend their money? If you don't like it, don't buy it.

Making people pay for game updates is pure bullshit

ThePunishedSnake: This is not the same thing, and you know.
The games sold on GOG are not compatible with modern OS if not properly tweaked. There are no enhancements, is the same game, only compatible with Wi 7, 8 etc.
Who's buying these old games on GOG? Many are people who played them before. Most of these old copies are playable, you just need a bit of work to get them to work, and people prefer to buy a new copy for convenience.

Getting a game to PC, with enhancements, or to another console, that's actually giving the consumer more value than just the same game, and it opens up the game to a lot of new customers.

How is this bad? If you love a game, would you prefer it to be forgotten on an old platform, or would you prefer to have a copy of it on your new system, and be able to recommend it to your friends who own this or other systems? That's exactly what GOG is doing by working on compatibility, but remakes do it while adding things and spreading it to more systems. Sure you can argue about the artistic merit of adding things, but arguing that making the games compatible with more systems is bad doesn't make any sense to me, even if developers make money from it.

Exactly what I thought. Yes, implementing backward compatibility on PS4 means the console would cost more because you need to insert Cell processor on it too, but...I would pay an extra amount of money if this mean having access to my full game library, both physical and digital. Even the cross-buy options...sometime happen, sometime don't.

During 2015 we'll probably see an Uncharted Trilogy too, so another remastered/remake or whatever.

Again, what GOG does is different. I mean, I can go out now to buy Last of Us on PS3 with no problem.
Can you do the same thing with Outcast, in example? No. Gog make possible this, since those games are not available anymore, if not from Ebay or similar. And they cost a LOT of money.

Again, GOG simply modify those games in order to run on modern OS, they are not "remaking" the same title.
I'm talking about on re-release one year old games with added feature for almost full price.

I never thought so much of the PS4, but the thing that really made it completely uninteresting to me was that it would not be able to play PS3 games.

They'll probably call it the uncharted Anthology and throw the Vita game in as well.
I think it is safe to say this community would have a serious cheek complaining about multiple releases of one game. The fact the first complaint about a game when it is released is usually "Can we not get the windows 95 suck my butt version aswell?"
This has been going on for decades in the music and film industries. Vinyl->8-track->cassette tape->CD->MP3 (talk about up and down). VHS->DVD->Blu-ray->4K.

Nothing like polishing something up and selling it to you again as enhanced. :)

If you don't like it don't buy it - the original isn't going away and you can still play it. There's no reason for commercial outfits not to re-release successful properties to make some more money off them if people will pay for the privilege, though.

ThePunishedSnake: Waiting for a GOTY is different then waiting for a remastered, Final Mix etc.
For awhile it was that when you got the GOTY, you had everything. now they release GOTY...and then sale or two later they announce the "HD" version :|

Personally i am starting to think i should stop buying even "good deals", because of family + backlog, if i dont play the game right then there is good chance that they will yet make some special edition out if it and make buy it 2nd time around.

For example Dark Souls 2 is apparently getting some sort of special treatment and some of the stuff is going to be exclusive. Possibly.

I bought both DS2 and season pass at descent discount, but am now starting to wonder why i bothered. I have barely started it and there is slim chance ill play the game through twice anyways. So wait for "HD" and buy again - or just play the "vanilla" and forget all about the possible extras.

DS2 forexample isnt even too old game yet, so releasing some sort of HD stuff (for money) so soon is in my opinion rather weird.
avatar
MikeMaximus: Exactly.

And there's a obviously a good market for people wanting to blow money on the same game over and over again, which is why they keep doing it.

They can fund the industry while I buy everything later at 80% off.
avatar
ThePunishedSnake: A GOTY is different from a remake/remastered. Because the GOTY is on the same platform first, and is the exact same game, except it includes all available DLCs usually. In fact some GOTY on Steam have the same entry for vanilla title, they are basically a bundle containing all available stuff. Waiting for a GOTY is different then waiting for a remastered, Final Mix etc.
Yes they're technically different, but the point remains. People are buying remakes, evidently in large numbers, or they wouldn't be doing it. In a bloated industry driven by massive discount sales I don't see how it's a bad thing they are looking to make some extra income off remakes for the people that feel like it's worth the money. 99% of the time I won't even consider buying a game at full price because I know there's going to be a better edition later for much cheaper, and I already have so much to play that I haven't touched. I can't be the only one and It has to be hurting the industry that so many people won't even touch a game at full price and the slack has to be picked up somewhere.
avatar
ThePunishedSnake: This HD remake trend needs to stop...
+1

I agree completely.

It's one thing to re-release a much better looking HD remake or compilation years after the original on modern systems, but 1 year later HD versions is ridiculous exactly as you said.

This makes me wary of buying products from any of the Publishers/Developers involved. And from the looks of it, Square Enix is the #1 culprit for this bullshit right now.

And I can't believe Namco is actually jumping in with Dark Souls II...
Why do car manufacturers keep producing new versions of their cars? I've got 15 Ford Focuses and the insurance and tax have damn near bankrupted me! If only there was an easy solution to this problem!

But it's a different thing. Exclude some movies like Star Wars, were director tune some things in and there, adding scenes etc.

Let's take The Shining, in example. The only thing changing between Bluray and DVD version is the resolution. Of course Bluray has better resolution, but the same is exactly the same.

Different thing is for The Hobbit and The Hobbit Extended. I bought the Extended edition waiting for it, because I know there would be one. In this case there are additional scenes.

I don't talk about commentaries, diaries etc, because those are even in some games. I'm talking about the game/movie in per se. If you insert the first person view in a third person game like GTA, that is a big feature you added.
